  • For episodic content to really take off compelling storylines must be a major component. SiN Episodes: Emergence has a number of shortcomings, but its weak storyline is the most noticeable. The success of the series as a whole is riding on this first episode, but other than being a fun shooter, it does nothing to hook the player. It's a piece of throwaway entertainment that's available for a moderately cheap price, but considering what it needed to be, Ritual hasn't really delivered the goods.

  • In concept, SiN Episodes: Emergence uses a novel approach by presenting an interesting story-telling method through the use of episodes. However, the story itself is lacking and the gameplay grows redundant, leaving little incentive for all but the most hardcore SiN fans to return for episode two.

While more than a few games leave me wondering what the developer could have done if they'd had more time and resources, SiN Episodes feels like a complete and polished experience that's been mulled over and considered for quite some time. Unfortunately, it often feels like a throwback to an older, streamlined style, where sheer explosiveness reigns over tactical nuance and variety.

  • Our only real gripe is that the weapon selection is meager; a pistol, a shotgun and a submachine gun fill out your arsenal. Although each weapon has an alternate fire mode, we'd appreciate a little more firepower to take down the bosses and clear tougher rooms. Still, there's plenty to enjoy in Emergence and the price is certainly right. Bring on episode two.

  • SiN Episodes: Emergence is a good looking game. It's got some really nice visuals and a really good sense of depth. The audio is a little sparse but at least we're not forced to sit through boring cutscenes just for the sake of forcing a storyline on us every few minutes. The story asks more questions than it answers, and if you want some answers, you'll have to buy more installments of this game as they are offered.

  • Fans of first-person shooters will get their fix from SiN Episodes: Emergence, but they might not leave the experience feeling genuinely excited for the next installment. The idea of splitting up a game like this into separate episodes seems like a good one, since many of us would be more than willing to pay $20 for an excellent single-player game that ties into subsequent chapters of the story. Yet the action and especially the story in Emergence aren't particularly impressive, so by the end of this brief episode, the novelty will have probably worn off.

  • Emergence doesn't quite work as an appetiser for a long series. As hooks go, not knowing what the main character's pumped with is a plastic clothes-peg in the mouth of a leviathon. What is here is a solid, conventional first-person shooter that plays to the strengths of the genre as they once were. And you know what? It's not big, it's not clever, but it is fun - and kudos to Ritual for making the game it wanted instead of trying to copy Valve.

  • En jouant à ce premier épisode, on a bien du mal à ne pas se demander si Ritual ne se moquerait pas juste un peu du monde. Clairement, leur titre a tous les airs d'un mod solo amateur, et pas le meilleur qui soit. Gameplay antédiluvien, I.A. à la ramasse, histoire navrante, finalement, le seul intérêt de cette distribution en épisodes serait-il de nous vendre 9 fois un jeu creux ? A vingt euros la pièce, il va y avoir un sacré challenge.

About the game

Built using Valve's Source engine, this follow-up to the SiN series takes on an episodic structure, expanding on the role of Colonel John R. Blade, a battle worn hero in charge of HardCorps. Joining Blade on his mission are JC, a HardCorps hacker with a secret to keep, and Jessica Cannon, a fiery rookie who can find her way into any secure facility.

The first chapter, Emergence, features never-before-seen weapons, characters and environments along with a host of interactive options, paying homage to its predecessors, SiN and its expansion pack, Wages of SiN.
