  • The flaws of the control scheme, combat system and obscure puzzles are more apparent a decade later, and while the graphics get an upgrade, it comes with some slowdown and minor changes in lighting and contrast that may upset purists. At the end of the day, these are two games from a dying genre that deserve to be remembered and played again.

  • Overall, the Silent Hill HD Collection is game that fans of the original Silent Hill 2 and 3 games will likely want to play. I found that it was enjoyable to go down memory lane one more time as many of the elements that made these older games great remain untouched but only for a splash of HD; but like many things from the past, some should really stay in the past.

  • Both are still great games and worth checking out if you haven’t played them, as I hadn’t. Still, the control scheme and camera are old school, and not in a positive way. Objectives are sometimes unclear and the PS3 version chugs like no one’s business in the larger environments. But these are classic games that are at the apex of the survival horror genre, now playable on current-gen platforms. Great games, warts and all.

  • Taking into account the previously released hi-def collections on PlayStation 3, including Konami’s excellent Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Silent Hill HD comes off as a disappointment. Not for the specific titles included, mind you, but rather for the sloppy handling and questionable changes associated with the conversions. The inconsistent presentation, compromises to the original developer’s vision, and lack of any interesting bonus features make this compilation’s $40 price even more unnerving than its games.

  • Konami has long had a habit of mishandling its properties, buts the inability to treat even these classics on the Silent Hill HD Collection with a modicum of respect is staggering. The disc feels like a rushed and sloppy cash-in, squirted out to exploit fans who have stuck with the series through years of drivel. It does a disservice to two amazing pieces of interactive art and spits on the legacy of what once was the crown jewel of an entire genre.

  • If you've been patiently waiting for the ultimate version of Silent Hill 2 and/or 3, this is it. What it lacks in extras, it more than makes up for in some of the best visual upgrades I've seen in a re-release and some truly fantastic new voice work. Whether you're a fan of the series or simply looking for an opportunity to get into Silent Hill, this is a collection you shouldn't miss.

  • The Silent Hill games have a more polarizing legacy, meaning the series may not be for everyone. Hardcore survival horror fans itching to return to the corrupt town of Silent Hill in the second and third games will enjoy the enhanced graphics and new and improved voice acting. Gamers unfamiliar with the era’s clunky controls are better off hunting for more modern thrills.

Silent Hill HD Collection reminds adults that, like children, they have deep, irrational fears. Silent Hill 2 remains a modern masterpiece, and the HD Collection proves it will stand the test of time regardless of technical or control constraints. Silent Hill 3, while not quite in the league of its predecessor, presents a similarly strong understanding of survival horror.

  • One new addition that cuts into the Silent Hill experience is trophies, specifically the little jingle that plays when you earn one. Sure, you can disable system notifications on the PlayStation 3, but doing doesn't disable trophy notifications. It's also unfortunate that Silent Hill 4: The Room, released around the same time and on the same platforms as the previous two, escaped inclusion in this release. Nonetheless, Silent Hill HD Collection is a convenient way for fans to experience the series' early years on modern hardware.

  • I can see why some fans will hate the way this collection has been handled. And I can also see how much there is for newcomers to enjoy. As a standard for HD remasters, it really isn't good enough. Lucky, then, that the games still are.
