- Bloober’s take on Silent Hill 2 is engrossing, even if words I would usually use to compliment other games like “fun” simply don’t apply here. I experienced the original game shortly after its first release, but I was still eager to see where the story was going and what new ways I would dive into the psyche of James and the others he met in Silent Hill. Despite the difficult revelations Silent Hill 2 unveils along the way and how uncomfortable the experience made me (by design) I was eager to immediately start the journey again after seeing the credits.

It managed to overcome the development team’s shortcomings, as well as a ton of unnecessary pre-launch skepticism, whilst delivering a faithful yet bold new remake. It allowes for a much wider audience to be able to experience such a timeless narrative. Whilst the gameplay does have its issues, just like the original, this is still one of the most compelling video game stories of all time, in a brand new and astonishing horror experience.

It successfully freshens up the presentation of the original story while tastefully expanding the gameplay through a modern gaming frame. Their handling of boss fights, monster behaviours and puzzles makes this title a fun time through and through, despite the depressing nature of the atmosphere and story. The new takes on characters offer increased depth through new facial capture and the voice actors successfully revise some of the more complex, awkward dialogue exchanges in a manner befitting of the original title. Akira Yamoaka slays with a fantastic remix of the soundtrack and Ito does some masterful redesigning of the horrific creatures. If there was a way to remake Silent Hill 2 this was it.

De game maakt nu gebruik van een over-de-schouder-perspectief, wat zorgt voor een iets andere ervaring ten opzichte van het origineel. De nadruk ligt iets meer op gevechten, vooral zichtbaar in de vernieuwde baasgevechten. De reguliere vijanden gaan daarentegen naarmate je verder speelt vrij repetitief aanvoelen; dit wordt mede veroorzaakt doordat de remake van Silent Hill 2 meer dan dubbel zo lang is als het origineel. De game ziet er visueel indrukwekkend uit, hoewel we vooral in de Performance modus meer stabiliteit in framerate en resolutie hadden verwacht. De sfeer blijft mysterieus en zenuwslopend dankzij het sfeervolle audiodesign en de vernieuwde soundtrack van Akira Yamaoka, die de unieke horrorervaring van Silent Hill kracht bijzet. Al met al is Silent Hill 2 een waardige remake naast het origineel en geen vervanging daarvan.

Het narratief is nog steeds een ware tranentrekker en grijpt je bij de strot - terwijl je ook vaak zat twijfelt aan wat je ziet. Audiovisueel is de Silent Hill 2 remake fenomenaal. Unreal Engine 5 tovert visuele pracht en praal op je beeldscherm, terwijl het audiodesign met bijbehorende soundtrack simpelweg het beste is wat deze industrie te bieden heeft. Bloober Team weet met de remake een aantal personages meer schermtijd te geven en een aantal zwaktepunten van het origineel op te poetsen. De combat heeft meer impact en de eindbazen voelen ditmaal ook daadwerkelijk als climaxconfrontaties. Ja, wanneer je iets te klagen hebt over Bloober Teams remake, dan is het vooral mierenneukerij. De performance kan nog wat patches gebruiken en het weet niet elke keer het origineel te overstijgen, maar één ding is zeker: Silent Hill 2 (2024) voelt als thuiskomen naar 'our special place'.

It’s ability to remain faithful to just about everything about the original whilst also feeling fresh and exciting is astounding. A few things do hold it back from being an amazing game, but what it lacks in some areas doesn’t distract from what the game truly is: an extremely good remake. It won’t resonate with everyone, especially die-hard Silent Hill fans, but what Bloober Team have managed to pull off here is incredible. Hopefully this is the start of a resurgence for Silent Hill and Konami will finally dust off the cobwebs to give us more exciting content. Only will time will tell, but after this I have a feeling the mist is starting to clear.

It is a superb thought-provoking story that hit closer to home than I had expected and it is propelled by a new combat system that really helps create the feeling of desperation. Sublime graphics, haunting environment design and truly chilling sound design and score help make this the quintessential horror game. I have never loved horror. But I truly love this game. See you in the fog!

Bloober Team faithfully captured the spirit of games from this early PS2 era to the point that it made me reminisce and long to go back and play more games from that time. To that end, I very much have the desire to go back to the original Silent Hill 2 and see how it matches up with this remake. While I can’t speak to how longtime SH2 fans might receive this revamped version of the game, for anyone else who hasn’t played any Silent Hill games before, this is a perfect jumping-on point.
