  • For Switch owners who might have already taken down the Order of No Quarter, the new expansions make it more than worthwhile for a double dip. Shovel Knight is an amazing franchise I hope to see continue long into the future, and is one of the few games I have actually beaten more than two times in this sea of endless titles releasing. A must own.

This is the best version of Shovel Knight yet, and Treasure Trove is the most complete package. In addition to piling ever more new features on top of the original, Yacht Club has improved on Shovel Knight in nearly every way with the Specter of Torment expansion. From the story and writing to the simple fluidness of platforming and combat, Specter Knight is an excellent new step for the series.

  • Shovel Knight has always been excellent, but bundling these three chapters together, including new functionality, increases the attractiveness of an already incredibly compelling package.

  • That is really my only criticism. You’ll be doing things in Specter of Torment that literally make you say “wow” out loud. It’s a smooth, expertly-crafted platformer filled with heart. Again, it’s a free update to your Wii U and 3DS versions so there’s no reason not to play it. For Switch users, it’s absolutely worth experiencing, as is the rest of the Treasure Trove.

  • Shovel Knight is truly a game that lives up to the hype surrounding it. It’s amazing and frustrating in equal parts, and is absolutely well worth your time if you’re looking to a homage to the days when gaming was fun, simple and all about discovery and platforming. While there are a few small problems that could easily be fixed in a sequel they can easily be looked past, as Shovel Knight is definitely worth digging in to.

  • It felt like I was discovering a wonderful game from the past that I had somehow missed when growing up. In-game achievements and a New Game+ mode add to the replay value, but even without those it’s a bargain for the fun. I would say it’s a must play for anyone old enough to remember blowing on a cartridge, but that would be selling it short. Nostalgia certainly enhances the experience, but this is a great game for anyone.

  • The backgrounds vary from dark and lamenting graveyards to bright, colourful pastures. Using old-style visuals hasn't held the developer back; if anything, the sheer simplicity of that approach has given it an advantage. ...It's unfortunate that this new version of Shovel Knight doesn't add much, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the best games on Sony's hardware. If you haven't already, now's the perfect time to jump into Yacht Club Games' 8-bit masterpiece.

  • Quirky, endearing, challenging and wholly entertaining, Shovel Knight offers a slice of old-school platforming action at its best. Fans of the genre should consider this title essential, and anyone else that feels like a break from the myriad of multi-million pound developments being released left, right and centre should seriously consider giving Shovel Knight a try. You never know, you just might love it!

  • Shovel Knight continued the trend of incredibly well crafted and well received indie titles in its release last year and is every bit as fun as it was then. Inspired by numerous classic games, Shovel Knight still manages to dig up its own distinct identity that makes the game worth playing again and again. While the game is essentially the same this time around, only seeing the addition of a Kratos boss fight, it just means another segment of the gaming community has the opportunity to play this fantastic love letter to the 8-bit era.

  • Shovel Knight is just what any veteran gamer’s inner child needs. Between the tight platforming, nostalgia-inducing graphics, and pitch-perfect sound design, old-school gamers need look no further for their fix. Younger gamers will appreciate the modern additions of checkpoints and Cross-save functionality, while hardcore gamers can simply smash those checkpoints and reap the rewards. It’s incredible to see a game that doesn’t just imitate the 8-bit era, but perfectly embodies it.

About the game

You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this valley with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and save his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade; a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!
