  • Though the menus are clunky and the game doesn't do much to welcome new players, the core game of Shootmania Storm is so wonderful to play that I can't help but want to always improve. It has a remarkably high skill ceiling, even if the basic controls seem simple at first. I believe the phrase is "easy to understand, difficult to master." Yeah, that fits this game perfectly.

There's elegance in ShootMania's simplicity, and it's great and refreshing to see some new ideas brought to a genre that's been largely abandoned by the big-name games. It does, however, lack personality and variety in weaponry, and feels overly targeted at the competitive gamer crowd, leaving little long-term appeal for everyone else.

  • It's good, but it's basically built to emulate what it's like to be a pro- Quake player, and in doing so it misses the point of the games it's attempting to remake. They were simple, and ShootMania isn't.

  • t's more of a return to the past of competitive shooters than a step into the genre's future. But in a market crowded with shooters that involve classes and weapons and perks, ShootMania Storm's laserlike focus on quick movement and skillful shooting almost feels new again.

  • Despite its bland and overly simplistic exterior, ShootMania Storm is like a blank canvas for FPS fans' creativity. Players who miss the days of Unreal Tournament matches will appreciate the game’s simple and uncomplicated gameplay, but those looking for more than basic victories should look elsewhere. It’s not a game everyone will appreciate, but priced at $20, those who want a classic, fast-paced competitive shooter should pick this one up.

  • Still, ShootMania Storm is a breath of fresh air in this world of carbon-copy military shooters. It’s a new take on an old genre that will satisfy anyone who grew up alongside the early shooters. If you were one of those kids who snuck a copy of Doom onto the PCs in your school’s computer lab, ShootMania Storm will make you giddy. It’s a game that knows what it is: an arcade-style FPS, and nothing more.

  • Sticking a score on ShootMania is an exercise in futility, because this is a toolbox as much as the modes it ships with. It is worth saying that, judging by TrackMania, the fruits of the community's creativity will be seen both straight away and for a very long time to come - and I don't think there could be a better studio in the world to have its hand on the tiller.

  • Overall Shootmania Storm is a decent, enjoyable shooter. It's community driven so content is never in short supply, and the sporty feel to the action is a breath of fresh air in a genre crowded by gritty modern-day shooters and fantastical sci-fi sagas.

  • If Shootmania can gather creative types into its playerbase, capable of bringing it new modes, weapons and maps then it could turn out to be a varied and lasting experience. But for now it feels like a shell or wraparound for a game that hinges on players engaging with the myriad tools available. Even the basic mechanics leave something to be desired, movement is a little floaty and the feedback for scoring a hit.

  • Despite ShootMania’s simplicity, it did still feel like being thrown into the deep end when starting the game, with little guidance as to what I should be doing outside of clicking through the various menu ‘stations’. ShootMania loads quickly, alt-tabs like a champ and is a fantastic example of a game that can take five minutes to learn, but countless hours to master in its addictive gameplay formula.
