  • MegaTen IV is a solid RPG, one of the most thoughtful and nuanced on the 3DS, with an interesting philosophical slant and a battle system that exceeds its peers. Held back only by slow intro and a few reductional overworld choices.

  • All in all, the battle system is rock solid and the fusing is as addicting as ever. Getting new powerful demons and watching your team get stronger and stronger through the game is exceptionally enjoyable, and taking down tough bosses is satisfying. A couple of disappointing changes to the narrative and characters aside, I had a blast with Shin Megami Tensei IV.

  • Shin Megami Tensei is a series that always seemed on the verge of moving beyond its niche audience but was never quite able to do so. ...The game may not transcend its genre, but it’s a great reminder of why so many us fell in love with role-playing games in the first place.

  • Shin Megami Tensei IV’s presentation is a mixed bag. ...Straightforward and addictive gameplay come together to make Shin Megami Tensei IV one of the 3DS’ best RPGs. The sheer amount of demons to unlock, multiple endings, and dozens of side quests means you’ll be playing this one for hours on end. The dark plot will appeal to gamers looking for a mature experience and the difficulty will please those looking for a challenge.

  • Shin Megami Tensei IV is the kind of game that has some people doing their happy dance and others running for the hills. If you're looking for hard-won victories, an impressive collection of demons, and some genuine Crazy Japanese Stuff (I say that with all affection) to be had from the story, then congratulations. This game is for you, and like me, you'll get a kick out of it.

  • Every single part of the game looks even better in 3D. Menus pop, dungeons expand away from you at great distances, and backgrounds twist and writhe with eye-popping fidelity. Without a doubt, SMTIV is one of the best-looking games on 3DS.

  • Battles are punishing – especially if you can’t compensate for your weaknesses or let the enemy get the preemptive strike – but rarely do battles feel unfair. ...Despite its shortcomings, SMT IV is a handheld adventure that RPG fans are sure to embrace for hours on end. While it doesn’t go in too many new directions, it makes some bold story moves that kept me reflecting long after I stopped playing.

  • Unfortunately, it's not a pillar of character development, or the best-looking game of its type. It's saved by the lure of the dark and mysterious world and the trials of fighting its inhabitants make Shin Megami Tensei IV a great role-playing game worth seeing through to the end. The excellent combat and the almost never-ending quest to explore the compendium of demons should keep you coming back for more, even if you have a fairly good assumption of what the other endings might entail.

  • Shin Megami Tensei 4 sets a high bar for difficulty early on, but its learning curve is so approachable that it's hard to get discouraged. Not every element is working against you either; a death on the field doesn't mean the loss of all your progress. ...With the game's rapid resurrection system, a potentially devastating loss of progress became a brief nuisance to my wallet and nothing more.

Shin Megami Tensei IV succeeds on the merits of its outstanding demon fusion system and combat, even if its story and exploration are only fair. Apart from a basic map it’s handsomely produced, and the pace moves at a good enough clip to keep things interesting. It doesn’t quite transcend the bounds of its niche appeal as an RPG, but it’s easy enough to recommend to anyone looking for a good hardcore dungeon crawler on the Nintendo 3DS.
