  • There’s nothing broken or non-functioning here. It’s a solid game. And if you’ve never played a Shantae game, this is an excellent first choice.

  • Overall, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a joy to play. If you’re new to the series, then this is as good a place to start as any. It offers a challenging, funny, and engaging platforming experience to entertain even the most hardcore of fans. Do yourself a favor and give this one a go. I know it’s given me incentive to visit the rest of the Shantae series!

  • If you haven’t gotten around to it by now, this is certainly the best way to play Shantae And The Pirate’s Curse. Tight gameplay, detailed visuals, and charming writing combine to make this a Metroidvania that is a must play for any fans of this genre. We’d give this game a strong recommendation to anybody who hasn’t played it yet and would still encourage veterans to consider double dipping. Though there’s nothing groundbreaking about this re-release, it’s still the same great game that it was before, and the few minor additions are a nice bonus.

Shantae is a classic game in the right senses. It’s got a decent challenge, it’s fun, and seeing as it’s on almost every console now, there is no excuse not to try it. Players that grew up during the peak of this genre can surely appreciate what Shantae has to offer, and newcomers that have taken a liking to it need to give Shantae a go, it’s one of the better games the genre has to offer in today’s market.

  • Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse tells an old story wrapped in humor with a cast of character’s you may genuinely feel emotion for. Developer WayForward keeps the combat simple, instead focusing on a variety of ways to tackle encounters and increasingly difficult odds to succeed. I appreciated the old art style, even if it got in the way of platforming at times, and the soundtrack kept me focused in and out of boss battles.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a gem of a game that deserves to get more attention on its second time around. Those that have nostalgia for platformers from the 16-bit era owe it to themselves to check out this quirky experience. There is a lot to love about the half-genie, and certainly not enough of these types of games currently available on home consoles.

  • Witty script aside, by now we’ve become accustomed to WayForward’s delectable pixel art direction and energetic soundscapes, and Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is unsurprisingly no different. Everything looks resplendent on the Nintendo 3DS, excelling even further with the visual depth that they masterfully provide through the stereoscopic 3D effect. Whereas Jake Kaufman’s soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to Shantae’s adventure, fusing Arabian and pirate-styled melodies and pounding beats into an audibly sensational treat for your unsuspecting eardrums.

  • The lack of meaningful obstacles lessens the overall experience a bit, but Shantae and the Pirate's Curse still stands as an excellent addition to a series with a devoted fan base. The Pirate's Curse adheres to the Metroidvania formula from previous games, but everything here feels bigger and better. I imagine the devoted fan base will only grow after more people play it.

  • The bottom line is that the Wii U version doesn’t make up for any lost features with its own unique features. Off-TV Play is nice, and the bounding box fits the GamePad, but at that point, you may as well just play it on the 3DS. ... Unfortunately, it lacks many of the bells and whistles that make the game so appealing in the first place.

  • Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is a triumph for WayForward and a treat for gamers. Very minor issues aside, this is one of the strongest titles on Nintendo's eShop and should be looked at as an example of how polished and robust a downloadable game can be. We're glad to see Shantae expand her horizons with the multiplatform Half-Genie Hero, but it's going to be hard to top this excellent Nintendo-exclusive adventure.
