  • It's a massive shame, as in terms of overall performance this third entry in the series runs well enough but there's just no getting around the freezing issue here, it needs sorting out with a patch ASAP before we can consider giving this one any sort of positive recommendation. For now, we'd steer clear of another disappointing port for Harebrained Schemes' stellar series.

  • Shadowrun: Hong Kong is sure to give RPG fans their money’s worth, with a compelling story that foreshadows a supreme threat and appropriately escalates until the stakes are higher than ever. The companions are so memorable—the ghoul samurai, the redeemed half-brother, the messy orc with really odd eating habits (and this is coming from someone who scoffs Cheetos sandwiches)—it’s everything great from Dragonfall expanded upon for a full blown sequel.

  • Harebrained Schemes has clearly spent a ton of time on narrative, character development, and world-building, all of which make it easy absorb yourself in the fiction. Sadly, the massive amounts of reading in Shadowrun: Hong Kong might exhaust players who are hungry for action, and the combat itself feels comfortable but well-worn. Shadowrun: Hong Kong is fun for a select audience, but doesn’t have the depth or innovation to stand out.

  • It uses Chinese myth and spirituality in an interesting way, albeit with a few predictable elements. Players who have already taken this trip with Shadowrun Returns and its expansion may find themselves wanting a bit with the gameplay, and newbies will have quite the learning curve to surmount, but if you see the gameplay as an adequate means to experience the more satisfying narrative end, Shadowrun: Hong Kong more than earns your attention.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong doesn't change much about the core gameplay experience that developer Harebrained Schemes has given us for three years now, but it makes up for it with a quality tactical RPG that's challenging, well-written, and filled with memorable visuals and audio. What it lacks in new features it makes up for in improving old ones, such as a better experiences in the Matrix as well as improved interface options.

  • Regardless, Shadowrun Hong Kong is a spectacular story of deceit and poisonous evil that will lure you through the most indulgent settings yet seen in the cRPG renaissance. For the price, the scale is giddying, but Shadowrun is starting to cry out for innovation—these are new assets and a fresh script retrofitted to a two-year-old game. Harebrained works tirelessly to please its backers, but if Shadowrun continues to tread water, the genre it brought out of obscurity could end up slipping back into the shadows.

  • Truth be told, some players have signaled game-breaking bugs in a couple of places. I did not encounter any of them, and none seemed to be widespread. Thus, what do we get when we draw the line? We get more Shadowrun and that is far from being a bad thing. What’s new is found mainly in the rather significant Matrix overhaul, the possibility to initiate combat whenever you feel like it and the atmosphere in Heoi.

  • It builds on the past games in subtle but smart ways, fixing what was broken, and not touching what wasn’t. As a result, players are left with a magical cRPG that gives players so many options. Whether it’s dialogue and story or character, combat, exploration and loadout options, this is about as close as folks are going to get to a tabletop experience.

  • All in all, the story and the characters are what will keep dragging you back to Shadowrun: Hong Kong – Extended Edition; you’ll want to see what happens to the team. Thankfully the gameplay is as solid as ever, but improved traversal makes things easier, and that ensures this is the best of those available in the Shadowrun Trilogy.

  • With its colorful setting and top notch writing, it's hard to dislike Shadowrun: Hong Kong. Hardcore RPG fans will definitely find their money well spent, but even more casual fans can select one of the game's pre-generated characters and appreciate the plot.

    About the game

HONG KONG. A stable and prosperous port of call in a sea of chaos, warfare, and political turmoil. The Hong Kong Free Enterprise Zone is a land of contradictions - it is one of the most successful centers of business in the Sixth World, and home to one of the world’s most dangerous sprawl sites. A land of bright lights, gleaming towers, and restless spirits where life is cheap and everything is for sale.
