  • Featuring incredibly boring minigames and a unintuitive control scheme, Scribblenauts Showdown is an embarrassing attempt to bring back a perfectly functional and enjoyable dormant series with unnecessary additions to its gameplay formula. Its sandbox mode can still provide a few minutes of silly fun if you just want to type in a bunch of words and adjectives just to see the onscreen results, but the overall package is incredibly shallow and uninspiring. This is one of the most disappointing games of the year so far, a new low for a previously acclaimed franchise.

  • Scribblenauts Showdown is a cookiecutter attempt at bringing back a lost franchise. While the party aspect isn't absolutely terrible, its bland nature made me shrug every time. And sure, the game tries to tie it in to the Scribblenauts franchise, but it misfires to an almost comical degree.

  • To say Scribblenauts Showdown is mainly a party game designed to be played with a number of friends, it’s great to see that it does include full functionality as a single player game, too. Sure, the Versus and Showdown modes might not be quite as fun against a CPU opponent, but a choice of difficulty levels means that there’s enough challenge and entertainment to be had even when your friends aren’t available. As far as party games go, however, Scribblenauts Showdown might just be one of my new favourites.

  • Scribblenauts Showdown doesn’t stray from its trademark cartoon-style visuals and while it’s certainly bright and colourful, this is now the sixth time we’ve seen them and very little has changed. Even the animation doesn’t feel like it’s evolved much since the original Nintendo DS game. Likewise, the audio suffers a similar fate, failing to leave much of an impression on the player.

  • If you’ve played the series before, Scribblenauts: Showdown won't be the game you’re expecting. If you haven’t, you might be left wondering what all the fuss was about. Yes, it shares the name and the look of those previous games, but it lacks the all-important creative heart of its predecessors, and ends up being a by-the-numbers affair that goes through the motions in a shallow attempt to turn Scribblenauts' unique premise into a multiplayer party game.

  • Scribblenauts Showdown is an agreeable party game that applies the playful vocabulary-stretching gameplay well enough to entertain you and some friends for a while. Unfortunately, the numerous minigames are all pretty shallow, the Showdown mode can grow tiresome, and the appeal of the Sandbox levels only lasts for so long. This will certainly make for an amusing evening with family and friends, but it's not likely to be a title you'll come back to more than a couple of times.

  • If you have never played Scribblenauts, this might actually be the best way to start doing so and, if you are a fan of the series, you will be surprised by the new additions to the word library.

  • Scribblenauts Showdown is a lot of fun to begin with, but it doesn’t take long for repetition to sink in due to the lack of content. Despite how innovative and deep the summoning dictionary is, the price tag is too steep to justify a wholehearted recommendation. Nevertheless, this is still a solid family game that’s sure to please gamers of all ages.

  • Scribblenauts Showdown is a fun game you can pick and and play at any time, but you may feel the novelty wear off without friends to play with. Despite this, Scribblenauts Showdown offers some great mini-games and game modes. It feels different to party games we’ve seen in recent times, but it’s also pleasantly familiar.

  • It's always good to try something new but, conversely, it doesn't always work. Here, it really doesn't work. Scribblenauts' charm was always in challenging the players to use their imagination and their diction to come up with fun and original solutions over the obvious or the mundane. While there's still some of that in Scribblenaut Showdown's Sandbox mode, it's too little to truly enjoy and too much focus has been placed on the mediocre party games instead. Even for the low cost, this is a considerably disappointing entry into the series.
