- On its own, the game is limited in its story mode and you’ll definitely beat it within an hour or so. All in all, it’s a decent game and I love the stylized approach to the graphics and that they kept the original feel of the 1993 game.
gareth · Apr 08, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Samurai Showdown Special Edition is a fantastic return of a beloved fighting game franchise. It’s a refreshing option for those who might want a break or palate cleanser from the combo-heavy and more bombastic fighting games that are more prevalent in the scene today.
Nick Baker · Mar 27, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - One of the best entry level fighting games, Samurai Shodown is an excellent return to form for the series. This Xbox series upgrade offers some small but much appreciated upgrades on the original title. Anyone looking to dip their toes into fighting games will do well to start here, that said, there is a lot to dig into after that.
AJ Small · Mar 25, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Samurai Shodown is a fairly decent reboot, albeit with somewhat dated principles and mechanics. The game plays fairly smoothly on PC, save for the very long and annoying loading times. The current cast of characters is interesting, but it’s sad to see that SNK clearly wants to milk the cow dry with single character DLC packages that cost way too much, especially if you want to have a full roster. The game’s decent, but we’d recommend waiting until the price drops somewhat.
Ibuki · Jun 30, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - Samurai Shodown is another worthy entrant into the PC world of beat’em ups. The reasonably short story that plays out is lacklustre, but the action - particularly when playing against others – more than makes up for it. The playing poster isn’t huge, but it does allow for more familiarity with each of the combatants and their skills.
William Thompson · Jun 20, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Samurai Shodown is a great fighter that looks beautiful, and deserves a much bigger audience than it has - but as of right now, there aren't enough players online to satisfy fighting game fans, and there isn't enough singleplayer content for more casual fans. The new characters that have been added since launch are great, but Samurai Shodown still feels like a game that needs an overhaul.
Dave Aubrey · Jun 17, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despite its uneven online play and frustrating load times, Samurai Shodown is still a game that fans of the fighter genre won’t want to miss – so long as they have a few friends play against locally. With a colorful (though somewhat limited) cast of characters, a wealth of game modes, and some smart evolutions of its tried and true formula, it’s still one of the best games in the series to date. Here’s hoping the game’s PC community grows, and SNK can iron out the few kinks that hold Samurai Shodown back from being the brawler to beat.
Francis DiPersio · Jun 16, 2020 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - Samurai Shodown continues in a long line of fantastic fighting games. While it may not have all the advancements of other fighting series, it continues to excel as an excellent addition to the franchise. After playing on my PC with my handy Xbox One controller, I decided that the next step is to play this on my AtGames Legends Ultimate cabinet.
Michael Newman · Jun 15, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - An excellent fighting game fine-tuned for tense, thrilling bouts. While the fighting is always fun, its feature set is slim, with only a handful of modes that don't stray far from the core gameplay. If you're looking for a fight, you've found a good one, but don't expect a big story mode or much side content.
Nicholas Montegriffo · Jun 15, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Samurai Shodown, the reboot, for the Nintendo Switch carries on the traditions from the game's original introduction. With plenty of battle mode options and a plethora of unique characters to choose from boredom shouldn't happen anytime soon. The game's mechanics focus more on timely execution of a move versus stringing together a complex set of combos. This mechanic alone opens up the doors for more players, even those who are "fighting game challenged"!
