- RPG Maker FES lets anyone try their hand at game development without the need to produce art or learn to code thanks to its pre-made sprites and event system. While the tools at your disposal are powerful, expect to be doing some research on how more complex actions work. The lack of an in-game sprite creator also diminishes the amount of unique content you can create.

Those looking for a deep RPG creation program will be sorely disappointing, but for players looking for a first step in that idea, or those preferring to craft something a little less grandiose, this is still an exceptionally cool—and unexpected—release on our shores.

It also serves as a learning tool to give users interested in game design. There is great potential for user-created content in RPG Maker Fes, but similar to many user-driven games, the quality of the games are entirely at the hands of the community.

You’ll certainly be limited by the tools (or lack thereof) available here, and the lack of a meaningful tutorial may hinder all but the most patient of designers. RPG Maker Fes feels like an incomplete product, like a beginner sewer’s kit that was shipped with only one color of thread and without instructions.

Rather than plod along in my own pitiful maps, I found that RPG Maker Fes is best experienced when playing the work of others. There’s a whole world of wonderful ideas that await you, and if you create something you’re proud of then I’d like to see it! Get creating, you creative types, and show the world what grand adventures you’ve concocted.

It does appear that doing so requires a separate 3DS app, but this app is free, even for those who do not own RPG Maker FES. With potentially endless RPGs available at the player’s fingertips, both for them to play and to create, RPG Maker FES certainly offers a whole lot of bang for its buck. Laboring with a stylus on the small 3DS screen is admittedly a little frustrating, but any player who has the patience to deal with it will find themselves investing countless hours into this outstanding title.

Many people may pick this up wanting to jump right in to creating silly little things, only to find themselves frustrated after hours of work because the silly little monster fight they wanted to make still isn’t working properly and they just don’t know why.

With its simplified toolset that does away with most of the programming features in order to allow for a streamlined system of creation, the simple act of building a world will still require patience and time.
