Lloyd · Oct 25, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall Romancing SaGa 2 was a great experience on the Switch. The console is a nice home for this retro gem and a lot of people are going to enjoy playing it for the first time. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re a fan of this genre.
Kaelyn Daugherty · Feb 22, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Romancing SaGa 2 is a remarkable experience that, even after such a long time, still has creative ideas that make the experience feel all the more meaningful. It still shows its age in places, not least for the fact that many of the gameplay mechanics that whir beneath its pixel art exterior are never explained to the player. But, those looking for a classic packed with challenge will find much to enjoy.
Alex Seedhouse · Feb 01, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - All in all, Romancing SaGa 2 is a decent RPG with some very interesting mechanics that were revolutionary for its time. There’s some issues here and there with the old style of game play where players aren’t told where to go or what to do. Then on top of all that, the game is not going to go easy on you. This one is for the fans of this style of game and for people looking for a bit of nostalgia. For those, you’ll find a finely crafted RPG with some interesting mechanics. At the same time, the price is a bit steep for a 25 year old game at this point. I would still wait for a slight sale.
Drew Leachman · Jan 16, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Romancing SaGa 2 is really intriguing new JRPG. The combat system has a great sense of depth thanks to its distinctive take on levelling, the inclusion of formations and how the player is held accountable for each party member. The kingdom management aspects also provide a greater sense of player agency and helps set it apart from conventional role-playing games.
Liam Doolan · Jan 15, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - In its systems and its storytelling, Romancing SaGa 2 is still a unique RPG -- one that genre enthusiasts may want to experience for its unorthodox methods alone. For all of its strange intricacies, though, this is a flawed fantasy adventure, hindered by potentially significant balancing issues and a horrible looking user interface. As a curiosity, Romancing SaGa 2 is worth looking into, but a lot more could have been done to bring the overall package up to speed.
Robert Ramsey · Jan 07, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Being a port of an 25 year old title, Romancing SaGa 2 gives a promising look back at how RPGs have grown over the years. With the gameâs story spanning generations of characters and a fairly decent story, Romancing SaGa 2 is worth the price, but try not to get too attached to your main character because you will die, a lot.
Azario Lopez · Jan 04, 2018 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Overall, Romancing SaGa 2 is a good remake that brings the game West officially. With appropriate updates and feelings of nostalgia, Romancing SaGa 2 feels like a game from the 1990s, but looks a lot more polished. With some unique gameplay mechanics and challenges, this JRPG is one that fans of the genre could be quite interested in. With this title coming to North America officially, we hope that the SaGa series gets more attention in the future.
Michael Chow · Dec 28, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Romancing SaGa 2 has a certain old school charm that invites any old school RPG fan to give it a shot. I don’t think it’s as polished as Square Enix’s other titles that came out during this ’90s era, but it’s something worth investing in if you want a different take on the standard RPG formula. It’s not for everybody, but Romancing SaGa has enough good qualities to give it a go if you’ve never played it before.
Bryan Rose · Dec 27, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Romancing SaGa II is not without its issues, but it’s an entertaining title overall. Fans of the SaGa series should check it out just for the historical aspect of it, provided they have tempered expectations for what they will get from the experience. Romancing SaGa II has the look and basic gameplay elements of traditional JRPGs, but deviates from the standard formula with nonlinear story progression, an heir system where multiple generations continue the quest and a nontraditional character growth system. These ideas make for an interesting experience, but the game’s age shows the limitations of the execution of these ideas.
