  • Overall, I don’t know if I can fully recommend RIVE. I would say the first hour of the game is really something special, but after that, it simply doesn’t give much incentive to pick up the controller again, which is a shame because the game’s visuals and framerate are excellent throughout. If you’re a fan of twin-stick shooters, RIVE is certainly a unique game that starts off with some promise. However, the drive to keep playing the game decreased with each mission.

  • From the moment Teslagrad begins you are instantly filled with the feeling that you are about to play something pretty special. The world around you is truly beautiful and the platforming puzzles are great fun to ponder over. A few difficulty spikes – particularly in the game’s boss fights – distracted us slightly from the game’s hypnotising ways but we had a wonderful time nonetheless.

  • It was a lot of fun then and it’s a perfect match with the Switch, letting you get in a bite-sized round of shooting or going for a multi-hour play session depending on available time.  That’s what classic action shooters do best, and despite the occasional misfired encounter, Rive pulls it off with style and an ending that leaves the player hoping that, just maybe, there might somehow end up being a Rive 2 after all.

  • Visually the game looks fantastic in both handheld and docked modes. The game runs in 60fps which makes the action look crisp especially with the massive amount of things going on the screen at one time. I didn’t experience any slow down which is incredibly satisfying when playing a hectic shmup.

  • I absolutely loved this game. It may prove a bit too difficult for some, but, as a bit of a glutton for punishment who grew up with 80s and 90s gaming, I must say that this was right up my street. The action is fluid, the platforming is tight, and the graphics are crisp and clean. If you are in need of a good pliable arcade action-platformer with tense boss fights that makes the most out of the Joy-Con’s HD rumble feature, then you can’t really go wrong with RIVE: Ultimate Edition. It’s a train hacking, tin-bashing good time.

  • In about two hours, I saw the death screen more times than through all of Dark Souls III. And, unfortunately, I found myself getting annoyed rather than enthralled with each passing death. Even with the very generous checkpoints, Rive failed to give me that sense of satisfaction after finally passing a difficult segment. Especially since most situations felt more like trial and error than actual skill.

  • It would be unfair to say this shooter is a mixed bag. It is so well-designed that its mechanics alone merit a look. It’s just a shame that the moment to moment experiences are so thrilling and yet so unable to affect. If you are itching for a side scrolling shooter, definitely pick up Rive. The action is fast paced and I haven’t played a game with controls this tight in a long time. But if you are not well-versed in this kind of game, expect to die a lot.

  • A solid game that definitely has an audience. Might lack replay value, could be too short or there are some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.

  • While it is obvious that Rive was a well-crafted digital love letter to arcade classics of yesteryear, this is not a game that will be joining that pantheon of remarkable releases. Just because a game is hard, doesn’t mean it is gratifying. Though it certainly has moments of brilliance, these glimpses are few and far between. It also doesn’t help matters much when the borderline mean-natured presentation and combat mechanics continue to over-emphasize failures, instead of trumpeting successes.

  • Rive is demanding, but it pushes the kind of near-thoughtless play that shoot-em-ups strive to achieve. When faced with an onslaught of enemies and environmental hazards, you'll have to think fast or die. Rive also doesn't run all that long, but what's here is excellent, top-notch action, and the game delivers some of the most memorable moments in a shoot-em-up in years.

About the game

RIVE’s unique 360-degree shooter/platformer hybrid lets you choreograph a ‘dance of destruction’. It feels like the explosive games of yore, pumping megapixels like it’s 2016.
