Critic Reviews
- For added excitement, enemies from one type of rift will usually fight enemies from another rift if close enough, even with swarms of players beating on them both. If you're feeling ambitious, you can even open one yourself provided you find a "tear" in the landscape. Yet if you and your fellow Telarans fail to close the rifts in time, the monsters start terrorizing the whole countryside, down to the quest hubs that story progression so desperately depends on.
Wyatt Bjorn · Aug 29, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Rift does a lot of things right; others, like the dull quests, err a bit on the other side of average. Its main boasts - the soul subclasses and the dynamic content - are fantastic ideas that occasionally go clunk every now and then, but the core there is solid and makes the game feel worthwhile. As with any MMO, there's very little that can't be fixed (or broken) with time and updates.
John Funk · Apr 18, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Rift is a young game, so it's natural for it to exhibit some growing pains during these early months. Still, even amidst the relative flux of rapidly-changing classes and other early-game kinks, the experience feels remarkably complete and cohesive. If you're an old hand at MMOs who's seen it all before, Rift's subtle wrinkles--particularly those of its class system--are interesting and well-executed enough to be worth exploring.
Game Trailers · Apr 12, 2011 Reviewed on PC - This is an online RPG in which you spend your time rushing from rift to rift, completing quests, and joining your guildmates in dungeon runs--not checking the official forums to see when the servers will be coming back up or wondering how long it will be before the auction house is added. If you're burnt out on fantasy MMOGs, you may not be able to look past Rift's more derivative aspects. But if you seek a comfortable blend of the old and the new, this is the online RPG you should be playing.
Kevin VanOrd · Mar 22, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There are flaws -- it's a game that will overwhelm anyone who hasn't experienced an MMO before, and it brings little new to the genre -- but to my mind the quality of the content, the detail of the world, and Trion's excellent early support outweigh those flaws. There's a steep learning curve, but once you're comfortable with what Rift offers, you will find a deeply immersive experience. Telara is a worthy alternative to Azeroth for anyone looking to explore a new world.
Nick Kolan · Mar 18, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - If you are craving an alternative to World of Warcraft but find yourself unable to give up WoW's gameplay style, then RIFT is pretty much your dream come true. And for anyone else who enjoys MMOs, you'll probably find quite a few things to love as well. Here's wishing for a long and healthy life for RIFT.
Josh Wirtanen · Mar 01, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Rift is one of the biggest and meatiest free-to-play games on the market, and is truly free to play , with all content accessible to free players without hassle. People who are looking for a great free MMORPG, especially those who enjoy creating a unique and personalised character need look no further. However, the gaps between substantial patches are sometimes long and tedious, but that is nothing for a new player going through the game at a moderate pace will have to worry about.
André Eriksson · Apr 03, 2016 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, Rift is an enjoyable experience. This game is completely worth its monthly fee, and so compelling that it will keep you coming back to it day-after-day to continue your quest to save Telera from Regulos. The basic storyline is enjoyable, and there is a ton of lore to find to get a better grasp at what is happening around Telera, and what every NPC character is doing to save it. If you are an MMORPG fan, give Rift a shot, the first month is free after all.
VGChartz Staff · Mar 26, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There’s so much here to get to grips with, and it can only get better as Trion already have plans for what they’ll do post release. Whether you’re an MMO veteran looking for your next fix, or if you’re a newbie looking to expand tour horizons and jump into the genre for the first time, RIFT is an excellent place to start. Just remember - we’re not in Azeroth anymore.
Joe Robinson · Mar 22, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - If you simply cannot bear the prospect of another fantasy MMO replete with all of the traditions that have come to define the genre, then Rift is unlikely to change your outlook. But if you hanker for a new world – one that feels familiar yet fresh, with an atmosphere of discovery and experimentation – then Rift stands proudly, ready to greet you with open arms.
