  • There is nothing revolutionary about Ridge Racer 7, but it is one of the best driving games on a console already busy with automotive titles. If you're looking for a frantic, fast racing game that is more concerned with nitrous and Hollywood handling than realism and heavy breaking, you should seriously consider letting Namco's latest drift into your game collection.

What Rigde Racer 7 is though is a brilliant arcade racing game. It's fast, fun, looks good and is highly playable. But the key issue is that this is yet another Ridge Racer sequel that comes with barely enough updates to warrant another purchase.

  • Ridge Racer 7 is an impressive game, but it’s not a racing game for everyone. It’s challenging and polished, but it can also take a bit of getting used to. This isn’t quite a killer app for the PS3, but it’s definitely a game that racing fans with a brand new PlayStation 3 should check into.

  • You will scream at your opponents and their tough AI, but in the end, it helps give this series longevity. In a world where racing games are getting shorter and have become easy enough to beat in a day, I’ll take the frustration of Ridge Racer 7 over the rest. It’s not cheap, it’s excruciatingly difficult. There is a difference.

  • Ridge Racer 7 is a great entry in the long-running series, which is good news, especially given that it's the first racing game available for the PS3. The gameplay changes made here are probably the most dramatic that the series has seen since Ridge Racer Type 4, though the repetition of tracks may be a bummer for some series fans who've probably played a mess of Ridge Racer 6.

  • It runs as smooth as butter, and with the rare ability to be displayed at 1080p for HDTV owners, it's plenty pretty enough. Give Ridge Racer 7 a test drive and find out why it's one of the most under-appreciated PS3 games at launch.

While not a revolution, Ridge Racer 7 takes the long-running series forward. It keeps the larger-than-life race dynamic that fans have come to love and adds a rewarding customization option. An even bigger enhancement deals strictly with online functionality. Would-be drivers will feel like members of a global race community, complete with constantly updating race statistics and personal achievements.

  • Overall though, Ridge Racer 7 still makes a good account of itself. It's better in some areas than 6, and is certainly brilliant played against real people, or just picked up and played properly with the nitrous turned off in arcade mode. But it's not really as challenging, I don't think, and hardcore fans will find more to sustain them lurking in the oceanic depths of its Xbox predecessor.

About the game

Ridge Racer 7 once again whips the racing series in a frenzy, with movie-quality visuals and a stronger online component from that of the Xbox 360 game, Ridge Racer 6. Director Masaya Kobayashi, assistant producer Hideo Teramoto, and sound director Hiroshi Okubo all worked on the successful PSP and Xbox 360 Ridge Racers, and are aiming to use RR for PS3 as a showcase of the system's power and capabilities. Expect 5.1 sound, blistering speed and graphics, 20 courses to racer on, online play for as many as 14 racers, implementation of cool Nitro system showcased in the last two versions, car customization options for at least 200,000 car variations per vehicle, and significant improvements in online play (including cooperative team play.) Best of all, Reiko Nagase returns in Ridge Racer 7, bringing back the racing queen of your dreams!
