- While RICO does little to separate itself from the unending stream of roguelike releases, it doesn’t need to. Randomized objectives, items, and enemies combined with solid shooting mechanics more than offset the too-similar levels and frustrating upgrade systems. It may not have much of a plot or breathtaking graphics, but that doesn’t stop it from being addictively fun to play.
Thomas Medina · Apr 03, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I like the graphics, what with the cel shading and the environments look nice. Unfortunately, after several hours with the game, I think I’ve seen every asset RICO is capable of showing me.
Zachary Miller · Mar 21, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Not that ‘Kick doors... shoot men’ needs any development; it’s the stuff around it. The more I played the game the more those words rose above the clamour. How frustrating that such brilliant simplicity be scuppered by strained mission design and a fragile frame rate. If you like the idea of RICO, my advice would be thus: ‘Kick doors... shoot men… wait for patch.’
Josh Wise · Mar 15, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - RICO’s a very hit and miss affair overall. There’s no denying that it wears its procedurally-generated content quite well, offering some exciting and constantly unpredictable gunplay as a result. Unfortunately, it’s hard to overlook its gameplay repetition, and there’s some irritating design choices and a bunch of technical issues to contend with throughout. I’ve no doubt that it will find its following, but I cant wholly recommend it as it is.
Anthony Cole · Mar 15, 2019 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - I found myself pleasantly surprised by RICO, and see myself coming back to it for weeks to come. If you’re a fan of either the Borderlands or Payday series, this game is a must try for you. My biggest request for the developers going forward is that it just keeps getting continued support… I think free updates or downloadable content would suit this game well – whether it be new weapon skins, characters, traits, or even skins for characters, I’d be pleased.
Seth Cano · Mar 13, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - RICO is simple, moreish fun in arcade FPS form; a literal corridor shooter that makes every gunfight a glorious exchange of bullets as you fight your way to the words ‘Room cleared’ over and over again. It’s great fun in single-player, but when you head into each randomised set of rooms in co-op, you’ll shoot your way into an interactive buddy cop movie right there in the palm of your hands.
Dom Reseigh-Lincoln · Mar 11, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - RICO won’t blow your mind with a gripping story, complicated characters and a questionable love triangle. What does do is provide a grab ‘n’ go title that’s fun to blast through with a friend on and offline with enough to keep you going for a decent amount of time.
Richard Atkinson · Apr 17, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - RICO is fun with a friend but don't expect more than a few hours of enjoyment.
Nikki Koolonavich · Apr 12, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - RICO is meant meant to be played in quick bursts of ridiculous action. Spend too long with the game and infinite loop of smashing doors and clearing rooms becomes rather tiresome, but that's fine, not every game has to be an epic that requires you to bring a packed lunch. It may not be the best looking title, and it does have a few technical hiccups, but for a quick hit of over the top action it works really well, even more so if you have a friend to join in.
Tuffcub · Apr 10, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - So, to summarise, while Rico won't be a contender for game of the year, it does bring a lot of fun to the table. It's simple, well-designed and unashamedly fun. Sure, it comes with a host of issues, such as similar-looking levels and a lack of enemy types, and there are cheap ways to kill them, but it still provides you with plenty of entertainment.
