  • Mercenaries 3D is a perfectly fine game. The underlying mechanics are a lot of fun and the new characters, maps and Skill system make it a more robust offering than anything that’s been on a console. But even these additions don’t justify the hefty pricetag, and with no online leaderboards to spur further playing, we suspect most will move on not long after the five-hour game is complete.

  • Even though the visuals are particularly strong, it would seem that a development shortcut that has been taken means that if you shoot enemies within the distance, the animation is limited to a slideshow where each direct hit causes them to immediately change posture without movement. It’s hard to describe, yet those that pick up the game will be sure to see what I mean.

  • An accurate port of the Resident Evil Mercenaries minigame - and that's all it is. An entertaining arcade experience, but lacking in depth. It's worth your money if you're a big Mercenaries fan or want a polished arcade shooter to kill five minutes with occasionally, but don't expect much beyond that.

  • Mercenaries is still a compelling a minigame, built on the rock-steady foundation of Resident Evil combat. But it's still a minigame, however padded out with recycled material.

...but wading together into a throng of the undead, guns blazing and fists flying, leaving a trail of dissolving bodies in your wake, is without question a grisly pleasure.

Really hard to put down, even though it makes our palms all sweaty and gives us horrible dreams about chainsaw men. You've got to play this - it's great.

  • The fast-paced, score-orientated nature of Mercenaries mode remains intact for the 3DS version, but even with all its bells, whistles and 'duo' co-op play, it never feels like a 'proper' game.

  • Even on a platform suffering a from a drought of software, The Mercenaries 3D still feels like a bad deal. It’s simply too much money for too little original content.

  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is stunning because of its lack of content. The game would work better as a downloadable from the Nintendo eShop for a quarter of its retail amount. Put simply, there is not enough game for the hardcore gamer.

Despite its considerable flaws, at its core, Mercenaries is a ton of fun. From the moment I started playing it I couldn't put it down. The core combat mechanics and thrilling atmosphere make for a very addicting experience.
