  • With Armageddon, Red Faction draws up a completely new plan that spells out every last detail of the player's job with little room for deviation, but the crazy damage model that's always defines the series plays as well here as it did in an open world. The destruction certainly packs a punch, it's just not quite enough to blow us away.

Despite its forgettable story and pacing issues with the campaign, Red Faction: Armageddon is good fun for letting out your inner destructive child. They ability to tear apart and repair the environments at will is a hook that keeps working, and when the campaign gives you plenty of stuff to tear apart it’s easy to lose yourself to a primal need to destroy.

  • If you were one of the people who bought Red Faction: Guerrilla and loved it, this game will disappoint you. Two of Guerrilla's most impressive features (the story and the open world) are gone, and a third (the sledgehammer) isn't as fun this time around. But if you look at the game this way, you're missing the point. Armageddon is about taking the tried-and-true formula of a cinematic third-person shooter, adding destructible environments and a few gimmicks, and watching the money roll in.

  • Red Faction: Armageddon is not a bad game; it's simply a confused game. At its core is a solid (if simplistic) third-person reflex shooter, and a good one, too. The problem is that everything about the game undermines its primary selling point, the Geo-Mod destruction, leaving behind a product that fails to reach even a fraction of its potential.

  • Red Faction: Armageddon is technically accomplished and mechanically sound. But unfortunately that's not enough in a world of Dead Spaces and Gears of Wars. Aside from marvelling at the odd collapsing building, there's little here to hold your attention for more than a few hours. It's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination; it's just an entirely forgettable one.

  • Armageddon is at its best when you can destroy everything around you, and is at its worst when you are required to simply dispatch hordes of aliens with your pistols. Yes, the story is a bit bland and the dialogue is downright odd at times, but the core action is pretty fun. Armageddon doesn’t offer anything that will profoundly change the way you think about gaming – after all, destructible environments and vehicle-based combat is nothing new - but it does offer a decent campaign and enjoyable online component, limited as it may be.

  • In the end it seems odd, and a little disappointing that Volition chose not to include any directly competitive multiplayer mode, especially after the unique flair of the one in Guerrilla. However, the modes available do provide plenty of fun and gameplay, making Armageddon well worth playing.

  • It makes strides in a number of key areas that are hard to ignore, including more polished visuals and a broader range of spectacular weapons and abilities. But ultimately, it manages to miss the mark when it comes to the core elements that made the open world game so great: freedom and ample opportunities to simply trash the game's world.

  • At the end of the day I have to say that Volition has managed to create yet another great entry into the world of Red Faction. Red Faction: Armageddon’s story manages to keep you somewhat interested, which is much more than the previous entry into the series, and the gameplay is addicting as ever.

  • Red Faction: Armageddon returns to the linear roots of the series with great success. Thanks to an enjoyably powerful arsenal and remarkably thorough destructibility, tearing your way through this alien-annihilating adventure is a blast. The campaign and Infestation mode offer a good amount of content, and the arrival of the magnet gun should be celebrated by anyone with a hankering for havoc. It's one of the most powerful, inspiring, and downright hilarious gameplay mechanics to come along in a while, and it makes Red Faction: Armageddon immensely appealing.

    About the game

Half a century after the Red Faction resistance freed Mars, the red planet again becomes a battleground. Colonists struggle for survival in the underground mines after the surface is rendered uninhabitable. When Darius Mason, grandson of revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya, unknowingly releases a long-dormant evil, Armageddon is unleashed on Mars. As settlements are torn asunder, only Darius and the Red Faction can save mankind. The battle will take them to the core of the storm-blasted planet through ice caves and lava flows until they are face to face against the unspeakable threat.
