- Despite that tiny gripe Rare Replay does an incredible job of bringing back some of the best games of the past 30 years into one convenient place. It's a great trip down memory lane, one that I bet will bring a lot of smiles to faces young and old. Now if you'll excuse me I have to get back to helping a bear and a bird collect puzzle pieces to stop a mean old witch. Ah, the good old days...
Jason Fanelli · Aug 10, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - This doesn’t change my opinion that some games in this collection have aged more like milk than wine, and that Rare could’ve done better in creating this bundle for new and returning players. I do not hold them to blame though, Rare Replay showcases a passion and love for games, I suspect that just like Master Chief Collection, an arbitrary “Anniversary” like deadline prevented this team from doing more.
Lucas Raycevick · Aug 04, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - There are 30 games here, and all of them are amazingly well-designed. This isn’t one of those cheap packages that boast quantity over quality, it is quite the opposite. There are titles on here some would pay $30 alone for, and the care taken to bring them to Xbox One is greatly appreciated. If you own an Xbox One, this is one collection you should definitely not miss.
Ken McKown · Aug 03, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Expressive characters warm your heart and catchy and complex soundtracks stick with you long after you turn off your console. Rare Replay is a great way to experience some of the best games from the studio's past, and the new videos that document Rare's storied history are the icing on the cake; it's just a shame that you can't access them from the start.
Peter Brown · Aug 03, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Rare Replay is an incredibly high-value retro compilation, which adds to its impressive (but sadly not exhaustive) line-up of classics with new ways to play and interesting bonus content.
Danny Cowan · Aug 03, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - I have little reason not to recommend Rare Replay, even to those who don’t have nostalgia for the studio. The breadth of content is impressive, and each game has been faithfully ported and upgraded in ways that don’t interfere the original experience. It serves as an exciting reminder of Rare’s best years and makes seeing the developer’s iconic blue and gold logo exciting all over again.
Kyle Hilliard · Aug 03, 2015 Reviewed on XB1 - Rare developed games seldom see a remastered version or show up on a digital back catalog due to the company having changed ownership. Thus, seeing a compilation as robust as Rare Replay allows wistful gamers the chance to relive precious memories faded for decades, and others the opportunity to enjoy some of the greatest games of the past by one of the most lauded developers of the time. Yes, the collection is missing a few of its best, but for a mere thirty dollars and hundreds of hours of enjoyment, it's a hard sell not to recommend adding this album to your library.
Sean Engemann · Aug 03, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - The 360 games not being tied in with the same milestones and launching via backwards compatibility seem slightly disconnected from the rest, too, even if a handful of them show Rare at its best. But had every game been given the same treatment as Grabbed by the Ghoulies, we'd be having to pay a lot more than £20. For what it is, Rare Replay is absolutely worth adding to your Xbox One collection, even if it leaves you wanting just a little more.
Tom Orry · Aug 03, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Rare Replay is a lengthy jaunt through the history of video games by way of one particularly diverse studio. The games range from uniquely ambitious experiments to fondly-remembered classics. It's an easy recommendation for value-conscious gamers who want to squeeze every last drop of entertainment from their dollars. Perhaps more importantly, it packs a surprising amount of historical heft, making it just as much a must-have for those interested in a broad and distinct look at the medium itself.
Steve Watts · Aug 03, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Performance concerns aside, Rare Replay demonstrates how a single developer has carried certain elements across a whole span of genres and platforms. There's a sense of ambition to Rare's catalog, of joy and whimsy, a brightness that comes through even in the more self-serious games. Rare Replay paints a picture of a studio always excited and eager to try something new, even if that new thing turned out imperfect. Whatever Rare's future, there's a history here that's worth remembering and celebrating.
