  • With repetitive gameplay, many occasions where you have to grind, a not-so-balanced difficulty curve and less than stellar graphics, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace is definitely not a stand out in the boss-hunting RPG genre - though it still may offer a bit of fun to the hardcore enthusiast.

Fans that have played the original title will still love taking on the epic battles both new and old, and the PS3 version controls and plays wonderfully. If you don’t mind a little grinding for better weapons and equipment, putting the time into ROA can be a very rewarding and enjoyable time spent.

  • And while I enjoyed ACE, it ultimately made me want to set it down and start playing Soul Sacrifice again, which had everything I loved about Ragnarok Odyssey but with amazing writing, atmosphere, a player choice system, and one of the greatest symphonic soundtracksyet. It's an enjoyable, cheap that tastes great, but doesn’t fill the stomach for very long and leaves you longing for more substantial fare.

  • Given its cookie-cutter narrative, polarizing leveling system, and late-game repetition, ACE doesn't address all the issues that plagued players the first time around. If it didn't satisfy your monster-fighting fix back in 2012, there's probably not enough here to draw you back to the battlefield. However, if you're a Ragnarok vet ready for more, or a new recruit looking to hunt some big game of the not-of-this-realm variety, then you'll want to start sharpening that oversize sword.

  • Sure, it may find itself in a bit of a rut by relying too heavily on the same tried-and-true questing system that loses a good level of entertainment fairly quickly, the plot is so transparent that I already forget what the story was all about, and the combat can get fairly repetitive after a while, but what it does well is so admirable that it makes up for a degree of its shortcomings, especially with its budget pricetag and the beautiful visuals on the Vita.

  • Enjoying Ragnarok Odyssey: ACE hinges on enjoying the original, because this is the same game that was released in 2012 with more content. Sadly, some of that content feels uninspired and downright lazy at times thanks to the re-using of assets and a hideous tendency to demand players work their way through dungeons that play host to a criminal lack of enemy diversity. The fundamental mechanics here remain the same, which means ACE isn’t worth its steep price tag if you didn’t like the gameplay of the first.

  • Ragnarok Odyssey ACE is great to pick up and play for a while, but as time goes by it might feel that there’s not much to delve into anymore and may even become too simple for you. Although it’s an improvement from the original, it’s still lacking in even its supposedly strongest feature, the combat, as the improvement just isn’t something to truly boast about.

  • It's hard to deny that encountering the same enemy every time you approach that one rock formation gets predictable, or that a new item at the tailor's shop is a lackluster reward for protecting your outpost from annihilation. Your mileage may vary with a good team in multiplayer, or if you're a particularly resilient brand of old-line fan, but everyone else should tread carefully--for as decent an experience as it is, Ace's shortcomings threaten to turn it into a shelf ornament, which is a rough way to spend your hard-earned cash.

  • Ragnarok Odyssey ACE provides almost double the content of the original and adds some successful new features, but fails to fix all the problems. Overall, it likely won't change the position of fans or critics. If you were wholly satisfied with the first title, then you'll want to purchase the upgrade. But if you were disappointed before, the new features aren't enough to incite a change of heart.

  • While Ragnarok Odyssey Ace introduces plenty of new tweaks over the original Ragnarok Odyssey - like the ability to hire AI-controlled mercenaries to help out with missions - it still doesn't do enough to make its world more complex or engrossing. Between missions, you'll rarely do more than grab a few potions or check in to see if your gear can be upgraded - and the town hub still feels like a wasted area populated by lonely NPCs.
