- Rage 2’s slick gunplay, entertaining powers and mad characters make the journey fun from start to end, even if its side-missions and open-world suffer from traditional tropes.
Matthew Forde · Mar 05, 2022 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The core mechanics in Rage 2 were very solid. Combined with strong visuals and a large map, there was a sandbox to have a lot of fun. Unfortunately, the events and missions you take part in have been used in every other open world. Rage 2 is built on a solid foundation but does very little to try and shake things up. You will find yourself getting tired of the repetitiveness quite fast, especially if you are someone who plays these types of games often.
Dan Hastings · Jan 06, 2020 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - RAGE 2 provided plenty of immersive entertainment and was a very entertaining and engaging game despite some frustrations along the way. The game clearly indicates more is coming to the story and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
gareth · Jun 07, 2019 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - Playing Rage 2 is infuriating. Despite the exemplary action and fluid controls, the shooter is cluttered with core design flaws that impeded my enjoyment. There is a damn good game buried underneath the low stakes story that’s filled with cutscenes that are interrupted by other cutscenes meant to explain a new character’s contrived backstory, and set in a world that lacks personality. Unfortunately, what we got is Avalanche’s Rage 2. Any game bearing id’s legacy should be all-play and no work, yet Rage 2 is too much work with not enough play.
Riley Constantine · May 31, 2019 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - When we first played the beta of Rage 2, we got addicted. The amazing world and fun gameplay will have you playing for hours on end thanks to the mighty combination of the insanely fun FPS engine, a large open world that has so much to do in it, a boat load of upgrades to choose from and many things to unlock. The graphical prowess of the game is impressive, but you’ll notice a lot of popping textures when playing. The sound design is superb, but the story portion of the game might be somewhat lacking. Nonetheless, Rage 2 is certainly worth checking out if you’re a gun-nut.
MC_JP · May 29, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Rage 2 feels like a game out of time. If it had come out in 2006, I think it would feel like a more complete game, something worth digging into and mastering, if only for the gunplay. If it had come out then, without so many of the lessons learned from other titles — successful and not — I could see people enjoying it for what it is. As it stands, Rage 2 is below average at best, even with the tight, enjoyable gunplay. There is simply too much getting in the way to make this package any more than something you pick up on a deep discount because you have nothing else to play.
John Schutt · May 21, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Rage 2 tries to do so many things in such a small timeframe that it forgets to do anything original or inventive with its many unfocused components. Its combat alleviates these issues in short spurts, but it's not enough to weave a cohesive thread through this confused trip through a familiar wasteland.
Alessandro Barbosa · May 21, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - There simultaneously needed to be a lot more of Rage 2 and lot less; a lot more depth in its driving, story, and missions and a lot less repeated content and long stretches of empty landscape. With all of the fluff in between frenetic firefights, most of Rage 2‘s incredible moments are bookended by elements that are underbaked by comparison. But id’s knack for making impeccable first-person shooting mechanics makes Rage 2 succeed despite having faults that would doom a lesser shooter.
Michael Leri · May 20, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Rage 2 isn’t the biggest game in the world. Nor is it the prettiest, or the most polished. Once you’ve explored its tame open world enough to open up your combat options however, it doesn’t really matter. In the heat of battle, the only thing you’ll be experiencing while playing Rage 2 is sheer joy. And it’s good enough to make all the boring bits in between feel worthwhile. It’s not perfect, but it shows that id’s brilliant brand of combat can be enhanced and implanted into an open world. Hopefully the open world will be better next time though, so the experience is more consistent.
Richard Seagrave · May 20, 2019 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Rage 2’s main drawbacks sit with its uninteresting story and its awkward, convoluted structure of progression. If you’ve both the forgiveness and the patience to overlook all of that, a shooter that deals in explosive action and sheer depth awaits. Rage 2 is all about having a mindless blast, and between its vastly varied combat, its interesting world, and its diverse gameplay, it certainly delivers on that front, and then some.
