This version contains so much that it is an easy recommendation. The campaigns can be played in co-op with up to four friends. Deathmatch returns with up to eight players and is crossplay compatible. The mod support is also here allowing us to get even more content.

  • The game is hard, so it’s best to grab a couple of friends and play through the five available campaigns. Quake has some replayability if you want to complete each campaign on each difficulty, or if you want to play the online modes. As a whole, we think this game will be appreciated the most by a more mature audience.

  • The fun, challenge, and action that made the game such a classic remains and the new content and enhancements not only make the game a nice trip down memory lane; it serves as an introduction to the series for those who were too young to experience it the first time around. Time has done nothing to diminish this classic and here is hoping we get more Quake in the future.

  • Yes, it still looks and plays largely the same as the original but is there anything wrong with that. The game played well when it first came out, and that has barely changed at all. Does it still hold up against modern shooters such as Doom Eternal or Borderlands? Probably not. It does feel quite basic, in both the gameplay and in the audio-visual experience. But if you want to relive some fond memories of taking down the monsters from the crypt, then Quake Enhanced will hit the mark.

  • Quake is a seminal shooter that helped define the genre, but it’s definitely starting to show its age. It’s well worth experiencing the campaign, but its design and enemy placement can occasionally feel unfair. Just as well, the multiplayer is difficult to get into if you’re not already familiar with it.

  • Enemies are visually grotesque, and their blinding-rage aggression makes for an experience that, even if you’ve played previously, is a challenging experience. You have to make the most of all your weapons, although the classic strategy of “use your shotgun as often as possible” remains viable. Ditto for the rocket launcher, the weapon most closely associated with the game.

  • Quake is a game with an overwhelming legacy, and playing this remaster makes one see why it got that; with its spectacular atmosphere, music, gunplay and, movement Quake is a classic that still holds up and in terms of atmosphere. All its expansions feel like a extension of the game itself and are worth playing through.

  • My first actual full playthrough of Quake was a pretty enjoyable experience. Not only is the port a solid effort, even going above-and-beyond of what’s expected, but it’s also still a great game. Maybe not Doom great, maybe not even Duke Nukem 3D great, but there’s room in this world for all sorts of flavors of ‘90s shooter.

  • Quake’s 2021 enhanced port brings a fresh coat of paint, and new content. Multiplayer keeps things simple and the lighting from weapons is bothersome, but matches are quick and the maps are well designed across the board. There are some aspects of the audio that don’t quite hit the mark. This release brings longevity to the table, opening the door for community created content to come to consoles.

  • Rather than score the game itself, what follows is an evaluation of the remaster. On that front, this is a fantastic release. I ran into a slight snag running it on the PS5, but that was it. Between the five campaigns, the console mods, and the multiplayer, this is a lot of bang for your buck. The controls are intuitive, the graphics are crisp, and the soundtrack is still excellent.
