- It’s a stunning package, filled to the brim with content both new and old, and barring the handful of small issues, it's a brilliant way to revisit one of the most iconic shooters in video games.
Graham Banas · Aug 20, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - It takes a genuine classic, improves and enhances it in a myriad of ways, and then gives you more. While some companies would just have delivered a simple port and perhaps thrown in the existing expansions as a treat, the inclusion of the Nintendo 64 version of Quake 2 and a brand new expansion here is truly to be applauded.
Richard Seagrave · Aug 18, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - In truth, Quake 2’s remaster puts a lot of other HD re-release efforts to shame, as id Software and Bethesda seem to be approaching this release as a celebration and preservation of everything Quake 2 related. Compared to other re-releases that slap a new lighting change into the mix and call it a day, Quake 2’s feels like it comes from better intentions, especially considering how cheap the game is.
Ash Bates · Aug 16, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Quake 2 Enhanced Edition is an exceptional remaster, turning a beloved classic into one of the better old-school shooters available for what's essentially a steal.
Ravi Sinha · Aug 15, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It’s an oppressively brown shooter, but it still carries the speedy, lightweight combat that makes older FPS games still pop today. The changes that Nightdive brought in for the remaster make it even more enjoyable and accessible. It may not have the same experimental charm as Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition, but it more than makes up for it with its tight and gory gunfights.
Zoey Handley · Aug 14, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Quake II is the new King of remasters. Proving that with a fresh coat of paint, some of the 90s’ best games can still hold up brilliantly today, Quake II is the best shooter I’ve played in years. Its visceral action is far more satisfying than the vast majority of shooters that release today, and modern improvements have helped sand away some of the rougher edges of its era.
Andrew Thornton · Aug 14, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - You've got enhanced graphics and audio, refined AI, brand new enemy animations, the iD Vault, Quake 2 64, a brand new episode from MachineGames and all previously released DLC in the mix here. Add in crossplay support and lots of co-op and competitive ways to play and you've got an absolutely outstanding release that's almost impossible to find fault with. Operation Evil Overlord has never looked, felt or sounded better.
PJ O'Reilly · Aug 12, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Quake II arrives on Switch in the form of one of the very best remasters we've ever had the pleasure of digging into. With enhanced graphics and audio, refined AI, all-new animations, the iD Vault, a brand new episode, and all previously released DLC in the mix — plus the N64 version — this is an exhaustive package that Quake fans are absolutely gonna eat up. Add in crossplay support, gyro controls, and lots of co-op and competitive ways to play locally and online, and you've got an absolutely outstanding release.
PJ O'Reilly · Aug 11, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - This is possibly the best remastering effort by Nightdive I have ever seen. This isn’t just “a means to play Quake II on modern platforms”. Just like how a remaster should be, it is the ultimate way to play Quake II, the one version to rule above any other, the port that makes every single previously released iteration feel like unplayable garbage as a comparison.
Leo Faria · Aug 11, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Veteran or newcomer to the industrial world of the cybernetic Stroggos, and the hard-rock fuelled action that can be enjoyed on it, look no further than what is without any doubt the best version of Quake II. Improving both the look, as well as the gameplay of Id Software's classic, plus adding all expansions (and then some), Quake II Enhanced is solid proof that if you want an old-school title to get the remaster treatment, Nightdive Studios won't let you down.
