  • Quake 4 is two great games in one, but neither of them stand out as anything that hasn't been done before. The multiplayer looks and feels too much like Quake 3, and the single-player adds military vehicles and weapons to gameplay similiar to Doom 3. But the engaging storyline, superb visuals, and high-powered weapons make Quake 4 two great games in one.

  • Early on in the sci-fi shooter Quake 4, one of your fellow space marines barks, "I do my job and shut the hell up, just like you should." This might have been the mantra of the designers, too - Quake 4 is here to kick some ass, not question the nature of its existence. That's a shame, because there's a twist to this first-person shooter that could have led to greater things; instead, the game feels uninspired and uninspiring.

The enemies go from dumb and running right at you to diverse and more interesting in the scond half of the game, and there are a few cool boss fights worth your while. The gory graphics and excellent lighting are well done and they'll appeal to many gamers looking for a fast, shiny game to just let loose on. Quake 4 isn't the next coming, but it's an entertaining game with a solid multiplayer component (and the full Quake 2 PC game bundled in). It's definitely worth your while.

  • Quake 4 could have been a great game, but the performance issues are so heavy that they have a negative impact across the board. The gameplay suffers both online and off because you often can't see exactly what's going on. With the Xbox 360 launch already stacked with quality first-person shooting, Quake 4 sits squarely at the bottom of the pile.

  • We've been told to expect Matrix style effects in Quake 4, but up until this point we haven't seen any evidence of these mechanics in gameplay footage. As Ravensoft has been keeping Quake 4 close to their chests up until this E3, it shouldn't be too long before the floodgates open and we're inundated with cool info.

  • Quake 4 is not pretentious. It's a hardcore shooter in which you don't have to be a hardcore gamer to experience. The single-player mode is great but it's relatively short. You will definitely want to get the most out of this game if you purchase it and that will require becoming addicted to the multi-player modes. I don't think you'll find that to be much of a problem.

It's a curious direction that Quake 4 has taken this time around, with the heavy emphasis on single-player, apparently at the development cost of multiplayer, previously its very selling point. And while the SP production values are certainly expensive-looking and sounding, the actual combat mechanics feel a step behind the evolution of the genre, and not in an intentionally retro way. And it's difficult to pin down why it turned out that way, because Raven Software is known for having its finger on the shooter pulse.

  • Id Software relied on its popularity and technical prowess for way too long, and in the process almost destroyed its two, once legendary, franchises - evident by how boring and unimaginative Quake 4 turned out to be (which, by the way, wasn't even created by it). Luckily, the developer turned over a new leaf, and gave the world the magnificent Wolfenstein, and Doom reboots, which both fused the old with the new. Hopefully, the same will happen with the fifth Quake, if it ever gets developed.

  • This eight-year gap between Quake single-player offerings gave Raven the perfect opportunity to deliver something very special that not only reinvigorated the brand, but showed off next generation FPS design. That Quake 4 is merely a glossy, standard, by-the-numbers trudge through past glories is an irresponsible way to treat such a revered franchise; to then cock up the conversion to the 360 subsequently and then charge extra for the privilege is bordering on scandalous.
