- From its old school design to its gameplay struggles, Prototype resembles a superhero who leapt off a building only to realize he doesn't possess the power to fly. I hate to say it, but picture a frustrating Spider-Man game, and you have a good idea of what this experience has to offer.
Andrew Reiner · Sep 22, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360 - Character models for nearly all foes and civilians are bland and poorly animated. It doesn't much matter because the game succeeds in making you feel awesome. It's full of moments where you perform something for the first time and it's just so brutal that you get a little giddy. He may not be unstoppable but Alex Mercer is more than capable. It's a blast to play and I had a great time from start to finish. Absolutely worth playing.
Destructoid Staff · Jun 18, 2009 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Prototype looked like it was going to be a hell of a lot of fun each and every time we saw it over its extended development, and it is fun, just not all the time. The combat can grate at times, the stealth elements grow tiresome quite quickly, and from time to time the game just doesn't know when to give you a break – there's so much going on that it's hard to see a way past a mission that's been sending Mercer to an early grave over and over again.
Tom Orry · Jun 15, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - Prototype is one of those rare games where the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. It concentrates on the relationship between the player and Alex instead of Alex and the other characters in the game. If you’re not cool with that, be warned. The controls are tight, though a little complex, but that’s only because there’s so much to dig into. It’s a little ragged around the edges, but if you’re looking for a great way to unwind after a long day, boot up Prototype for some serious therapy.
Game Trailers · Jun 12, 2009 Reviewed on X360 - That's a word that can be used to describe almost every aspect of Prototype, and although there's no multiplayer component, you're free to remain in Manhattan long after you've beaten the story or, if you prefer, go through it a second time while retaining all of the powers that you already unlocked. Prototype is good enough that you'll almost certainly want to keep playing either way, and even if you don't, there's more than enough fun to be had here in a single play through for us to recommend the game without hesitation.
Justin Calvert · Jun 11, 2009 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360Read full review - There’s one caveat: the more powerful you become, the more likely you are to notice one of Prototype’s central flaws: the controls are great for blasting around like a high-speed madman, but they can be a tantrum-inducing bastard when you need them to be precise. If you’re trying to scale narrow surfaces (like the pinnacle of the Empire State Building, for example), you’ll need to take it extremely slow if you don’t want to leap out into space – and even then, Alex might inexplicably hurl himself off the building with no input from you.
Mikel Reparaz · Jun 10, 2009 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360Read full review - Prototype is really all about player empowerment, ramping up the number and intensity of larger-than-life superhero abilities consistently as you go. If you've ever harbored fantasies about soaring over skyscrapers and going on destructive urban rampages involving wantonly thrown automobiles--and who among us hasn't, really--odds are you'll find a lot to like about this game.
Brad Shoemaker · Jun 10, 2009 Reviewed on PS3, X360Read full review - All in all, Prototype is one of the best games to release this generation and is definitely the best game to drop in 2009 (so far). Outside of the lackluster stealth and disguising mechanic, the brutal combat, huge open-world, varied challenges, and utterly satisfying gameplay makes this a must-have title for any serious gamer's collection. Get ready to put your life on hold!
Jonathan Marx · Jun 09, 2009 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360Read full review - Prototype is a game with many cool features. However, it lacks many of the finishing touches that make for a great and memorable game. To say the graphics and game engine need work is a massive understatement and many of the missions are cookie cutter in design without any real focus or attention to detail. Thankfully, Alex Mercer's absorbing and shape shifting powers manage to overcome many of the shortcomings of Prototype.
Erik Brudvig · Jun 09, 2009 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I have to say the sheer epic feeling you get from the game makes it worth trying but it has a number of flaws, almost entirely involving a lack of polish. Extra work could have easily brought the game up from mediocrity and onto the doorstep of true greatness. Having fallen well short of that though, I would say anyone who finds the idea of being a superhero an appealing concept will probably be happy with a purchase, but for those who are just looking to pass the time with an interesting action game you may want to stick to the rental on this one.
