- For better or worse, Daybreak didn’t design PlanetSide 2 for instant gratification. I’ve had hours of playtime where enemy forces were so overwhelming that I barely got anything done. But I’ve also had hours that were full of tense battles filled with explosions, multicolored lasers, and missiles. When you play at night, it looks like a chaotic fireworks show.
Giancarlo Valdes · Aug 07, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It's a shame that so many times that experience had a wet blanket thrown on it by elements that, in a perfect world, should never come between you and the thrill of combat. But, sadly, they too often do. Technical faults aside, Planetside 2 remains a wonderful online experience capable of absorbing dozens upon dozens of hours.
Steven Messner · Jul 31, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Daybreak says it is committed to improving and expanding the MMO, which should give players plenty of reasons to continue returning to the battlefield. As it stands, there's more than enough incentive to give PlanetSide 2 a try; the gunplay is solid, player progression moves along at a rewarding clip, and the intercontinental war is like no other in gaming – even if it lacks a point.
Jeff Marchiafava · Jul 21, 2015 Reviewed on PS4 - Planetside 2 gives you a massive and fun online shooting experience, and it’s completely free. Yes, there are microtransactions, but they are very unobtrusive and do not give nearly enough of an advantage to be labelled “pay to win.” Despite the harsh welcome to the game, you will soon get acclimated and feel like a badass helping your team win objectives. There is literally a world of fun in Planetside 2, and its persistent, epic battles will, I know, keep me coming back for a long time.
Patrick Anderson · Jul 13, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Like so many big games with dozens of complex moving parts, your enjoyment of PlanetSide 2 on the PlayStation 4 rests on how forgiving you are of technical hiccups you would properly expect to be vanquished. As you play, the questions mount. "Why did that tank vanish into thin air after I fired my homing missile, and why did my missile then shoot into the sky?" "Why did my vehicle just sink through the geometry and explode?" "Does the view distance need to be this bad, even on a snowy continent?"
Kevin VanOrd · Jul 09, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Unmatched in both scale and scope, Daybreak has crafted a prodigious world that feels alive with emergent stories and unique player experiences, and beyond some technical frustrations, PlanetSide 2’s transition onto console is undoubtedly impressive.
Michael Briers · Jul 06, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - To that end, SOE has done an admirable job in realizing this potential with PlanetSide 2. Like any MMO, there are many ways in which PlanetSide 2 can grow, ranging from adding more vehicles, weapons, and equipment, to new gameplay types, or altogether new continents to do battle on. But what we have here at launch is a spectacularly solid foundation for which SOE to build on and an awesome game in its own right.
Michael Bitton · Dec 20, 2013 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It’s not fantastic, as the many small problems drag down the experience and often lead to frustration. It’s certainly not mediocre, though, as the large-scale battles and necessary teamwork elevate it above simple shooting drudgery. As it is an MMO, the minor problems will be ironed out over time, and the core mechanics are just far too intriguing to ignore. SOE did something interesting here, and even if it annoys at times, it’s still worth playing.
James Murff · Dec 18, 2012 Reviewed on PC - Planetside 2 is free, but that isn't why you should play it. You should play it because of the chaos of its big, beautiful wars. You should play it because its most exciting moments don't occur when you turn the corner and paint a target in your sights. They occur when you're sitting in a troop transport, rolling towards an opposing force, and wondering how the battle will unfold even if those battles aren't always perfect.
Griffin McElroy · Dec 14, 2012 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Making good on the aspirations of its predecessor, PlanetSide 2’s vision of large-scale warfare is the most exuberantly realized yet. And with a payment model a good deal more generous than the 14 day trial teased by Everquest all those years ago, there’s certainly little reason not to give it a go. Harnessing the intrinsic strengths of its platform, PlanetSide 2 provides an intriguing look into the future of shooters as well as a heartening realization of the free-to-play model.
