  • Pikmin 2 is a tough game to recommend, especially with the brand new Pikmin 4 featuring a much more successful version of its key feature, the caverns. The high difficulty requires a lot of investment from the player to overcome, and the lack of bespoke design underground makes the journey to overcome those obstacles too tedious to feel rewarding. Dedicated fans who want to be pushed into learning the intricacies of Pikmin’s mechanics will find something special in the unique challenge, but pretty much everything else about Pikmin 2 has been pulled off much better in another game in the franchise.

  • The thing about Pikmin 2 is that there are some who will appreciate or even love the changes it made. To me, the reliance on procedural dungeons just makes the experience feel wrong-headed and heavily padded. Others are going to see them as something that makes the title feel bigger and badder than its predecessor.

  • As inventive and charming as when they released 20 years ago, 'Pikmin 1 + 2' on Switch are a welcome way to revisit Nintendo's wild excursion into the real-time strategy space.

  • It’s a unique style of game that has rarely been duplicated – though the recently released Tinykin game is a bold attempt. Pikmin 1 is a brilliantly designed game. A relatively simple concept which forces gamers to truly flex their mental muscles at times. Pikmin 2 expands on what makes Pikmin 1 so brilliant with some added elements, but the addition of the sublevel caves is a bit of a point of contention for some. Both games are worth a playthrough.

  • Both games have been given an HD upgrade of course and while certainly much improved over the blurry look of the Gamecube games fall well short of this year’s Metroid Prime Remastered. Motion controls are included although feel less precise than I’d like although I found no issues playing with the more traditional control scheme. In all, while Pikmin 1 and 2 are rather straightforward ports the reduced price point makes a purchase feel more justifiable.

  • Pikmin 1 and 2's Switch ports might not be much of an upgrade in a technical sense, but the games themselves have stood the test of time wonderfully well, thanks to their timeless game design, addictive loop, intuitive controls, and healthy dose of charm.

  • The Switch release of Pikmin 1+2 doesn't mark enough of an improvement on prior versions of the games to be a definitive upgrade, but copies of the first two titles on both GameCube and Wii have skyrocketed in value over the years. For those who aren't double-dipping, nothing about the HD renditions should prove a major turn-off as a way to play the games for a comparatively reasonable price. Although the lack of any new content or major overhauls prevents Pikmin 1+2 from standing out on its own, a competent package of two masterpieces still proves to be a worthy release.

  • Pikmin 1 and 2 on Switch are the barest of bare bones ports. The clarity added by HD resolution and 16:9 support simply isn’t worth losing the improved controls of the Wii versions. In addition, these ports lose some of the original’s charm and contain strange glitches. While it’s great to have these games available on modern consoles, the Wii or GameCube releases are still the way to go if you can.

  • Pikmin 2 is a fantastic follow-up to the 2001 original that expands upon its predecessor's core gameplay in some neat and well-considered ways. This is a bigger game, with more areas and dungeons to explore, a larger variety of Pikmin to work with, multiple protagonists to control, and a few extra modes thrown in for good measure. It may be a bare-bones port, and we do really miss those Duracells, but this is a game that's aged remarkably well and, with foundations as delightfully entertaining and inventive as this, it's still an experience that we highly recommend checking out on Switch.

  • Pikmin 1+2 is a joyous bundle of two fantastic games, but the price tag and lack of technical improvements might put some off. The Nintendo brand of RTS style gameplay still holds up perfectly in 2023 though, and the charm of the games is undeniable.
