- As inventive and charming as when they released 20 years ago, 'Pikmin 1 + 2' on Switch are a welcome way to revisit Nintendo's wild excursion into the real-time strategy space.
David Morgan · Jul 05, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It’s a unique style of game that has rarely been duplicated – though the recently released Tinykin game is a bold attempt. Pikmin 1 is a brilliantly designed game. A relatively simple concept which forces gamers to truly flex their mental muscles at times. Pikmin 2 expands on what makes Pikmin 1 so brilliant with some added elements, but the addition of the sublevel caves is a bit of a point of contention for some. Both games are worth a playthrough.
Alex Everatt · Jul 05, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - To me, Pikmin is average at best. It’s a game that has aged poorly, especially when it comes to these dated controls. The fact this wasn’t even a remaster, but a bare bones upscaled port of a game from 2001, certainly didn’t help. It did nothing to fix its many issues, nor did it receive improvements in its visuals, audio, or performance. It can be fun for a while, and having yet another (costly) way to have it preserved for the future is nice, but I certainly am not enamored with the franchise after playing it.
Leo Faria · Jun 30, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Both games have been given an HD upgrade of course and while certainly much improved over the blurry look of the Gamecube games fall well short of this year’s Metroid Prime Remastered. Motion controls are included although feel less precise than I’d like although I found no issues playing with the more traditional control scheme. In all, while Pikmin 1 and 2 are rather straightforward ports the reduced price point makes a purchase feel more justifiable.
Ryan Janes · Jun 30, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Pikmin 1 and 2's Switch ports might not be much of an upgrade in a technical sense, but the games themselves have stood the test of time wonderfully well, thanks to their timeless game design, addictive loop, intuitive controls, and healthy dose of charm.
Shubhankar Parijat · Jun 29, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The Switch release of Pikmin 1+2 doesn't mark enough of an improvement on prior versions of the games to be a definitive upgrade, but copies of the first two titles on both GameCube and Wii have skyrocketed in value over the years. For those who aren't double-dipping, nothing about the HD renditions should prove a major turn-off as a way to play the games for a comparatively reasonable price. Although the lack of any new content or major overhauls prevents Pikmin 1+2 from standing out on its own, a competent package of two masterpieces still proves to be a worthy release.
Álvaro Rodríguez · Jun 27, 2023 Reviewed on Switch - Pikmin 1 and 2 on Switch are the barest of bare bones ports. The clarity added by HD resolution and 16:9 support simply isn’t worth losing the improved controls of the Wii versions. In addition, these ports lose some of the original’s charm and contain strange glitches. While it’s great to have these games available on modern consoles, the Wii or GameCube releases are still the way to go if you can.
David Flynn · Jun 26, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Pikmin 1 remains a delightful puzzle adventure that sees Nintendo at its most charming and inventive. Yes, this Switch port is a little bit underwhelming, with just a higher resolution and some new controls to get excited about, but with a core game this good, it's still an experience that comes highly recommended. Over two decades on from its original release, Pikmin's unique brand of magic remains undiminished.
PJ O'Reilly · Jun 23, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Pikmin’s unique premise and tight design have ensured that it remains rather ageless. Even the graphics, as aged as they are, still convey everything they need to. It’s every bit as enjoyable now as it was back in 2001. Pikmin nailed it so hard on the first try that its sequels could only really iterate on the concept.
