  • I think the game’s title of Perception works out to have a double meaning, obviously concerning your main character’s lack of sight, but it also applies well to whether you’re likely to enjoy the game as a whole. If you’re in it for the action or actual horror you’ll very likely walk away disappointed.

  • Perception is a game that holds all the basic elements to make for a decent horror game. The idea is unique, the sound is atmospheric, and the story does have potential. It’s everything that’s in between that, sadly, lets the whole experience down. The gameplay hook that it rides upon never really feels as interesting as it wants to be and the stalking mechanic just slows down what is already a laden-footed ordeal.

  • The plot isn’t particularly engaging, and the horror elements are predictable with jump scares, characters and story dialogue that is typical of this genre. Even if it does fulfil all of the necessary criteria, it serves as a reminder that the horror genre is far too reliant on clichés to get by, and will only appeal to the thrill seekers happy to overlook its generic design.

Perception gave me an even greater appreciation and understanding of potentially how a blind person goes through daily life, and while I may never know how that truly feels, even a glimpse of that life, experienced through a videogame, has touched my heart in a way I never expected.

  • Perception is the first title I’ve played with a blind protagonist (Beyond Eyes is still sitting in my backlog) and just barely misses the target. While the premise and stories to be told are quite interesting, the tension and moments of hiding from The Presence don’t operate at the same standard. Perception can occasionally see flashes of greatness hidden beneath the average horror experience, but I don’t see myself returning anytime soon.

  • I can say, without a doubt, that Perception was up there as one of the most purely scary games I have ever played. The blindness mechanic really does serve as the game’s greatest asset, when it’s all working correctly. It also drags the game down harder than it should, and at times I almost found myself wishing there was a “sight” mode. Still, if horror is your thing and you don’t mind being lost, then you shouldn’t wait any longer for this.

  • An imaginative horror game, Perception is coming at a well trodden genre from a new angle, but despite its good ideas, it doesn't quite live up to its own potential.

  • Games like Perception will always be welcome, those that at least try to do something new, but its reliance on tired horror game conventions holds it back. Still, if you’re looking for something to tide you over between now and the next big horror release, Perception certainly has something to offer.

  • There are moments when it all meshes together quite nicely — the story elements, Cassie’s blindness, and waves of horror — but they are in very short supply. Play Perception if you’re in need of a quick horror fix, and not for what could be perceived as something larger. You may walk away less disappointed than I was.

  • In the end, Perception has a great idea at its core, but its execution unfortunately lets it down. The gameplay falls into a repetitive loop of heading to marker after marker, and the few horror elements that should have been keeping you on the edge of your seat end up being nothing more than a nuisance. Despite its originality, Perception is only worth a look for those who can see past its shortcomings in pursuit of a fairly compelling narrative.
