  • Unlockables consist of two more difficulty modes as well as achievements. The list of achievements is fairly large so players can enjoy trying to unlock them all which adds to the game’s replayability. Paranautical Activity was an interesting play, however the lack of progression of difficulty made it a struggle to enjoy.

  • Do you like roguelikes, first-person shooters, Minecraft visuals and rave music? If you like all of those, then Paranautical Activity is a dream come true for you and you should buy it right now. If you like only 3 or less of the above, this game is definitely not for you. Paranautical Activity only caters to a microscopic niche due to its weird design choices. Add in average-at-best controls to the mix and you’ll get a somewhat subpar roguelike experience for the Switch, a console already full of much better choices.

  • While it offers a briefly entertaining alternative to an already impressive selection of first-person shooters on Nintendo Switch, Paranautical Activity soon reveals itself to be as low-fi and forgettable as its appearance on WiI U in 2016. Even with its performance issues, the similar and far superior Immortal Redneck is a far stronger option if you want to explore roguelike dungeons through the prism of an FPS.

  • Paranautical Activity takes what should be a straightforward idea and fumbles the execution. There are many flaws but really this is a game that lacks any sort of polish. I can’t find any real reason to recommend this game over other far more competent rogue-likes but maybe with more work there could have been a fun gameplay loop here.

I wanted to love Paranautical Activity a lot more than I did. I actually got addicted to Ziggurat and other titles using the same premise, at least for more than a handful of runs. Sadly, this title doesn’t bring anything new to the table, nor does it set itself apart outside of the visuals. The levels are boring and the enemies and shooting are not satisfying enough to keep it going.

  • If you like retro-styled graphics and old-school FPS games, you'll find plenty to like here; if neither of those appeal to you then you may be out of luck. If you like the concept and can overlook the technical problems here you may have an unexpectedly good time.

  • Minor quibbles aside, Paranautical Activity is easily in the upper echelon of FPS roguelikes. For those who are prepared to face the gauntlet and die over and over, this game is more than happy to challenge your reflexes and fireball dodging ability. It’s been said that twitch shooters are a relic of a bygone era, but games like this prove that sentiment wrong, and are arguably the next logical step in their evolution. It’s a dream really, as Paranautical Activity and games of its ilk offer endless takes on Knee-Deep in the Dead. Only this time with a few less keycards lying around.

  • Paranautical Activity may not be a great game but it is a very playable, very fun one. ...everything comes together nicely once you adapt to the play style. Paranautical Activity is a good, solid arcade FPS that demands adaptability as much as fast reflexes, and if you can manage both of them then just maybe you’ll get to the mysterious eighth floor. If not, then it’s far too easy to try just one more time.

  • Small, dark and not very handsome, Paranautical Activity is a disappointment. Lame weapons, poor controls and a lack of personality nip this one in the bud.

  • The soundtrack is the highlight of this mixed bag of good ideas and poor implementation and when all is said and done, it's a shame that the gameplay and visuals cannot live up to the scene set by the music.

About the game

Paranautical Activity combines the classic FPS action of games like Doom and Quake, with the randomness and difficulty of modern roguelikes like Binding of Isaac and Spelunky.
