Indeed, this is a game of great touches. Intelligent Systems takes great care to shape its RPG for portable play. The world is divided into Super Mario Bros-style levels that each pack a tidy little narrative. Levelling is removed in order to keep these vignettes grind-free. And it’s all wrapped up in Nintendo’s typically hilarious localisation.

  • While Paper Mario: Sticker Star probably isn’t the innovation that they are calling for, it’s definitely a more engaging style of Mario game. You’ll need more conviction to finish this title than just grinding through the simplistic offerings of these other games, and it reeks of Mario fan service all the way through. Outside of some puzzling problems with progression, Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a fine addition to the Mario franchise.

  • While it may not have been the true successor to The Thousand Year Door like many fans hoped, Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a fine addition to the RPG spin-off series. Despite some disappointing design choices and a mechanical far cry from past entries, those that can keep an open mind will find a charming adventure with snappy writing and interesting innovations that can't be found anywhere else.

  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star still has much to applaud, however. An energetic soundtrack matches its distinctly stylised world, with stereoscopic 3D granting intricately layered visuals that showcase the very best of what can be achieved on the handheld.

  • Sticker Star's lavish tapestry of neat touches keeps you pushing forwards in spite of the wonky puzzling and boring combat, and its vibrant, buoyant world marries so well with the script's deliciously wry take on Mario's classic tropes. It's just a real shame that the rest of the game feels paper thin.

  • There's just no getting around it: Paper Mario: Sticker Star is yet another high-quality entry into Nintendo's cherished library of first party titles. The experience is high on satisfaction and low on frustration, making it an undeniably perfect fit for the company's mobile console. It's not entirely flawless, but as Mario games go, it's one of the best.

  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a cute and light-hearted title with enjoyable gameplay that has a great puzzle component that is not overly difficult but still calls for some ingenuity now and then. The sticker museum added a collecting element to the game which I enjoyed as it provided me a secondary objective to the game adding to the overall gameplay experience.

  • The game’s superfluous combat and unforgiving puzzle-solving mechanics only serve to bog the experience down; I can only assume that, without them, Sticker Star would have been infinitely crisper and more enjoyable, but whether they’re an attempt to cater in some way to the “expectations” one has when playing a Paper Mario game or simply a fairly transparent means of padding the length of the game, they do a lot to tarnish what is otherwise a colorful, joyful experience.

  • Sticker Star exhibits some growing pains, but the new direction pays off in spite of them. The lack of traditional RPG elements will take time to adjust to, but once you’ve cleared the hurdle, you’re rewarded with a solid game that hones in on its clever puzzles and refined battle system to deliver an experience that simultaneously comforting and novel.

  • If you can get past the repetitive combat and possibly even enjoy the grind towards the final boss, there's a lot to love in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. It doesn't hold up against the compelling experiences Fall 2012 is rife with, but it's another worthy entry to the ever-expanding 3DS software library.
