Critic Reviews
- At its best, Panzer Paladin leans into its great core platforming to offer genre comfort food. Its movement tools feel rewarding, with twitchy controls and a fun variety of traversal options. The game's aesthetic is similarly successful, capturing the buoyant energy of 80s mecha anime with period-appropriate character designs and vivid coloring. But unfortunately, the game’s level design isn't always as compelling.
Elijah Gonzalez · Sep 04, 2020 Reviewed on Switch - While it doesn’t revolutionize the genre, Panzer Paladin has some great features and mechanics. The story is left to be desired and there isn’t as much depth in the weapon breaking system than I wish it had, but it checks all the boxes and goes the extra mile without ever really needing to. Whether you’re a casual player or a speedrunner, there is plenty of content here to keep you busy.
Cameron Hawkins · Aug 13, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Panzer Paladin also has a variety of extras, including a second run at the story mode with redesigned levels, speedrun and boss rush-style tournament modes, and even an option to design your own weapons. As throwback retro adventures go, it hits a lot of the right marks, even if some of those targets are ideas that might have been best left in the past.
Matt Miller · Aug 05, 2020 Reviewed on PC - Panzer Paladin is a fair length, true to itself, action-platformer. Between its ever-growing difficulty, including a few spikes here and there, and the fact it knows what it wants to do and dives right into it, it’s hard to fault it. With so many different weapons already in the game and the ability to design your own, the huge variety in gameplay and bosses, and the distinct variance in the levels.
Aaron Price · Jul 21, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Its excellent visual direction and soundtrack definitely helps it stand out from the crowd, and once you get a handle around its core weapon system, it becomes clear that there aren’t many other games out there that play quite like it. Panzer Paladin sticks hard to its old school influences, even if sometimes to a fault, but it mostly pays off.
George Yang · Jul 21, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Panzer Paladin's uncomplicated gameplay won't be for everyone and there are some very minor niggles that hold it back from true greatness. Even so, it has heart, and that goes a long, long way. If you're into retro throwback games then you should really give this a try; Panzer Paladin is an unpretentious, exuberant action game from start to finish, and a must for genre fans.
Stuart Gipp · Jul 21, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Panzer Paladin's degradable-weapon mechanic adds a unique element of strategy to the mix, and playing as Flame outside of her Panzer suit lets you discover some cool secrets. However, there are times when the instructions are vague and the lives system doesn't need to exist in this day and age, but it's hard to stay mad when you're surrounded by this much 8-bit beauty.
Nadia Oxford · Jul 21, 2020 Reviewed on Switch - Those complaints aside, Tribute Games' idea to include the unique weapon system and the ability to create your very own sprites is fantastic. Further, there's a suite of extra game modes that will extend the longevity of this title and give players plenty of content to tackle. Shovel Knight's deluge of content is finally over, so why not give another retro platformer a try with Panzer Paladin?
Austin Suther · Jul 21, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Panzer Paladin isn't afraid to put you in frustrating situations that require patient timing, agile reflexes, and occasional foresight. It also asks you to consider every ability at your disposal, a lesson that took me way too long to get down. (A word of advice: don't forget about your backward dash.) Tribute Games tapped into a treasure trove of classic games, and that adoration shines bright in Panzer Paladin.
Jordan Devore · Jul 21, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Even if it was all-action/no-brain, Panzer Paladin‘s retro-look is bursting with style in a way that other NES-throwbacks frequently miss. There’s a lot to love here, including harder remixed versions of the levels and a speed-run mode, but its mean-spirited death penalties mean you have to work for it.
