  • There are brief moments of inspiration in Overdose. Although much of the first chapter is downright dreadful in terms of art direction, things pick up in chapter two. It’s certainly an interesting experience being attacked by demonic chicken coops. Take a dated game engine and add in some dated, unrefined gameplay and you’ve pretty much go

Painkiller: Overdose may be a case of déjà vu to series veterans and those who regularly gravitate to this genre. Furthermore, there are a few flies in the ointment. However, it brings just enough new material to the table and it certainly doesn't lack for places to see and things to mutilate. Ultimately, hardcore shooting fans with a taste for that semi-stupor brought on by incessant gunplay and bloodletting will devour what Painkiller has to offer and come back for seconds.

  • Being a fan of the original, I really enjoyed this game. It’s a good distraction that will keep you looking forward to the next level just to see how over the top it will truly be. Overkill is a high-octane thrill ride from beginning to end... or in other words, fun.

  • You might actually feel brain cells dying while playing Painkiller: Overdose, but even so, it's hard to quibble with such pure, dumb fun. Even though long loads can cause more angst than the multitudes of monsters trying to disembowel you, this old-fashioned shooter is a welcome respite from the scripted, story-driven epics littering the FPS landscape these days (and a pleasant reminder of the simple joy of shooting fiendish creeps in the face).

  • Some may argue Overdose is less sophisticated than other present day FPS titles since there are no major objectives, there's no squad-based tactics, there's absolutely no puzzles, and not a lot of environmental interaction besides decimating everything in your path. Perhaps that may be the case, but what the game does it does with style and flair.

  • Overdose started life as a fan-made mod and it shows. While it's since gained official approval and funding, Counter-Strike this ain't. Its slender charms would probably be enough to earn a small PayPal donation if it had fulfilled its destiny as a shareware download, but as a professional mid-price release it just isn't up to the job. They say an overdose is usually a cry for attention. This is one you can safely ignore without feeling guilty.
