  • Overgrowth is similar to how it feels when you watch some old movie you remember loving as a child only to realize it’s incredibly bad as an adult. Sure, parts of it ooze cool, and there are not many games that can pull off that smooth, leg-sweeping, jump-kicking, mid-air-dagger-throwing combat like Overgrowth can, but that’s the only redeeming characteristic. It looks awful, it makes no sense, and half the time I’m wondering if I’m actually the bad guy.

  • Overall, Overgrowth was a fun experience, with fun platforming, dizzyingly high jumps, and pretty good combat. The story hooked me from the start, and the gameplay sold me the rest of the way.

The combat of Overgrowth is exhilaratingly fun with everything's working as it should, but that’s not very often. You also have to get used to the wonky and weird way it interprets both combat strikes and landings. It's a shame that everything else about Overgrowth, whether it's the story, the level design, or even the physics system, feels undercooked. It's not hard to find some fun here, but it's fun you'll soon forget.

  • As it is, Overgrowth feels a bit too empty. It has all the pieces to be a great martial-arts, parkour, bonanza, yet the buggy controls, repetitive fights, and short campaigns all let it down. The modding community does bring the game’s value up tenfold, adding whole new levels to play and parkour challenges to annoy yourself with, but it’s not enough to make it feel complete.

  • Nine years is a long time to be working on a project, but what Wolfire Games was able to do in developing their own physics and graphics tech is pretty cool. Overgrowth is fun and challenging (sometimes brutally so) and it held my attention for quite some time… which takes some doing! If you like games with rag-doll physics and a beat’em up style, Overgrowth is for you! A word of caution though, it can get a wee bit bloody.

  • Unique, frantic combat interspersed with mediocre platforming.

  • Overgrowth is a distinctly satisfying game to play, and it knew what it was good at and stuck with it. The stories are short and uncomplicated, but they provide distinct and varied environments to fight in with enough reason to keep you invested. The game’s camera and loading times are the only two let downs for me, but the sheer visceral brutality carries the game past those two problems.

  • Overgrowth is a difficult title to recommend. Though there's entertainment value in whooping some cottontails, the included story mode doesn't offer nearly enough content, nor does it excel at showcasing all of the game's capabilities. However, there are plenty of fun mods to play around with. The various battle arenas and parkour stages are pretty decent as well, and there's even a downloadable grenade, because blowing up a crowd of rapier-wielding cats never gets old. In any case, if players are willing to test ideas and experiment, then their time is likely to be well-spent here.
