  • In Overcooked: Special Edition, developer Ghost Town Games has achieved something special. Beneath the surface of this crazy culinary adventure is an experience that is outrageously funny to play with friends, that, even when your kitchen is burning down and the fire extinguisher out of reach, will never fail to raise a smile. It’s a perfect fit for Nintendo Switch, and a game that you need to have in your life – it will be all the better for it. For, there is nothing in the world as contagious as laughter.

  • If you’re looking for a great couch co-op game, you’d be hard-pressed to find another game like Overcooked. It’s got enough stress to keep the game interesting/challenging and playing with friends is a blast. The content may run dry after a few hours but there is still a lot of replayability in trying to beat your high scores on each level. Overcooked is definitely worth checking out on the Switch.

  • There you have it. Overcooked Special Edition may have officially turned one year old today (Happy Birthday, by the way!), but it hasn’t lost any of the excitement that it originally set out with. Given that the Switch already has a nice little lineup of multiplayer-heavy games, Overcooked fits in quite nicely. And it’s pick-up-and-play style of gameplay is something that I would imagine to have a lot of pull, regardless of what kind of gamer you are. Overall, Overcooked is an incredibly charming couch multiplayer, with just the perfect amount of challenge, that is sure to keep you and your friends entertained for hours to come. The next time you’re hungry for a new game, be sure to pick this morsel up.

  • All in all, Overcooked is an absolute must-buy for anybody looking for a fantastic party game to play with friends. The wacky visuals and chaotic gameplay make it an ideal game for local co-op, and there’s plenty of content to work through. Although there are some disappointing launch issues with the framerate (reflected in our scoring), we still give this one a strong recommendation overall; it's a title that perfectly nails what makes local multiplayer games so fun.

  • Overcooked’s success is based primarily in its varied take on a simple concept. In every stage, the goal is to just make meals, but clever, nigh-endless obstacles and twists complicate things, forcing new strategies and tactics to be tested and used.

Overcooked: Special Edition is one of the most fun local co-op games around, even if the Switch port has some problems.

  • Overcooked contains all the necessary ingredients for a truly excellent co-op game. Stress is always balanced out by feelings of accomplishment and progression, and its gameplay requires a mix of smart planning, consistent communication, and some level of dexterity to execute plans effectively.

  • Aside from from the local-only consideration and some inconsistencies with the scoring criteria and stage layouts, man, what a game. Overcooked is the best co-op experience I've had in recent memory, and despite going back through to fully clear every level, I wish there were more. Don't overlook it.

  • For a game that clearly embraces wacky fun and the party atmosphere, I don’t understand why progress is blocked by a star system. It would be a much better (and less stressful game) without it. Don’t let these unnecessary roadblocks scare you off. Overcooked is a wonderful local co-op experience, and a party game that hits all of the right notes in turning friends against each other and making even the quietest people scream uncontrollably.

  • Overall, I found Overcooked to be a very fun game with a decent amount of replayability. The game really excels in party situations or couch co-op, but is fun enough to warrant a single-player experience as well. While it could be argued that the game would have benefited from network play, I can’t help but feel that something special would be lost if you couldn’t directly yell at the person who forgot to wash the dishes.

About the game

Overcooked is a co-op cooking game for 1-4 players. Working as a team, you and your fellow chefs must prepare, cook and serve up a variety of tasty orders before the baying customers storm out. Take part in an epic journey across the Onion Kingdom and tackle an increasingly challenging and bizarre gauntlet of kitchens which will push your skills of co-operation and co-ordination to the very limits.
