  • Nidhogg 2 is fun to play for a few rounds at a party, but it’s not exactly the next EVO hit. It’s a pick-up-and-play game with the potential for intense matches between friends, but that’s about all it’s good for. The game works, and none of its few weapons feel more powerful than its peer. The problem is that there’s no reason to keep playing. Arcade mode isn’t varied enough to make it worthy of more than a single playthrough.

  • Overall, Nidhogg 2 is a successful follow-up to the dynamite original, instantly making this one of the must-have local multiplayer games on Switch. Not much is there for the solo player, though the online multiplayer is nice. The ideal setup is a slew of friends passing off controllers in the tournament mode, but even in less than ideal multiplayer scenarios, it’s still a chaotic and wacky blast.

  • No one can deny how well Nidhogg 2 suits the Nintendo Switch. While the controversial new art direction may split the fan base and the lack of kill count record comes across as a strange absence, this stabby sequel’s healthy amount of new stages and a fun weapon system still makes it an absolute must for couch competition.

  • The weak single-player offering and online lag are certainly low points, but the trippy visuals, chill soundtrack and frantic gameplay all combine to make this a recommendation for those of you looking for another great title for playing with friends; solo combatants may wish to exercise some caution, however.

  • Even though I sill have no idea what the overall point of the game is, I couldn’t help but enjoy the wacky nature of the game and the simple yet skill based combat. Unfortunately I was not able to test out the online multiplayer, but even if I could Nidhogg 2 still lacks enough modes to keep me coming back for more. The lack of a difficulty setting is also a let down for the arcade mode.

  • Nidhogg 2 doesn’t stray too far from the concept of its predecessor. This, depending on what you want from a sequel, will be for the better or for the worse. Regardless, there’s no doubt that this game offers one of the best and most tense 1v1 experiences in recent memory. What I found most compelling is how in-depth and robust the game can be, whilst remaining totally accessible and fluid throughout.

  • Nidhogg 2 provides the same smart simple style of dueling found in the original game providing both intense and hectic battles. The multiplayer stages and quick battles that constitute each match consistently delivers a short burst of adrenaline rushed fights. It's unfortunate that there isn't a satisfying progression system to link everything together.

  • Messhof Games was able to expand upon a simple concept in Nidhogg 2 without ruining what made the first game great. The new weapons are a welcome addition to the franchise, and the variety of maps prevents the experience from growing dull too quickly. However, it would have been nice had the developers put more thought and care into making the online play better, because as it stands right now, it simply isn't worth the hassle.

  • If you put plenty of time into Nidhogg and you’re pining for something to freshen it up, Nidhogg 2 should do the trick. If you’re new to the series and on the look out for an excellent party game then I see no reason to look further than the budget-priced original. By making the original so fantastic, Messhof has fallen on its own sword in making a sequel.

  • Nidhogg 2 is an exemplary symbol of how to create a gratifying multiplayer game. It builds on the simplicity of the original while maintaining an identity of its own. This simplicity alongside its uniquely grimy visuals creates an inviting experience that anybody can jump right in and enjoy. The additional weapons and cleverly designed stages add an extra layer of strategy, giving it enough complexity to appease those who want it, but still rudimentary enough for players who want a straightforward experience.

    About the game

The rules are simple. Reach the other side and kill anyone that stands in your way. Deftly parry and rend their throats, riddle their bowels with arrows, or squish their brains between your toes. The wurm cares not for chivalry.
