  • NHL 14 is a very, very iterative update to a stellar franchise. While this review sounds somewhat negative, it has to be said that the game as a whole still represents relatively good value to fans of hockey. It’s the only show in town for console players, and that’s not a bad thing given that there’s plenty of playing time to be had.

  • From top to bottom, NHL ’14 has improved a great deal on last year's installment and still is one of the most exciting sports game to play. With heavy online presentations, staying connected with your friends and top rivalries will continue to be a staple. I can’t say NHL ’14 is a perfect game, but its beauty is well-polished and fans of the sport can lean on EA’s version with a gleam of puppy love.

  • EA Sports, after years of change and experimentation, has generated something that brings in players both old and new in a way that even other EA Sports games haven’t done. Even though NHL 94 mode doesn’t go too far or last very long, it’s a genuine method that makes NHL 14 accessible to more and more people across many facets of past experiences, or lack thereof, than any other sports title available. The online aspects of the game are on a positive track as well, but the unresponsive menus and unsophisticated AI still make their appearances.

  • All of this considered, NHL 14 is most certainly a better game than last year's, but whether it's enough to convince you to go for another purchase will likely depend on how badly you want improvements to the series' more physical game elements. In terms of visuals, commentary, and feature set, little of NHL 14 changes notably from what was on offer last year, leaving only the hitting and fighting systems as the marquee upgrades. NHL 13 had a pretty massive chasm between the quality of its gameplay and its feature set, and that chasm hasn't really been filled in much at all this year.

  • Although it might not be based on the most popular league in America, NHL 14 is the best sports game so far this year. With an intuitively designed interface, refinement to become more user friendly and tons of noticeable tweaks, there’s a great game of hockey here that can be enjoyed by both hardcore and novice players alike. The NHL 94 Anniversary Mode is a fantastic inclusion that will allow many retro-minded naysayers to forego dragging out a Genesis to play hockey and positions NHL 14 to be the premiere pick up and play sports game in multiplayer environments.

  • NHL 14 is not a bad game; it's just a very familiar one. The core game remains quite good; the tweaked hitting physics and new fighting model can provide some spice, and the sheer number of solo and online options give you plenty to do. But the new features brought to the table don't add enough over what was available in NHL 13, making this a dubious buy for anyone who still has last year's game and can live without the crushing new hits and more widespread fisticuffs.

  • All in all, NHL 14 is a very polished game that takes full advantage of its subject to create an intense, thrilling sports title. Its brutal, energetic nature offers a unique experience that most gaming versions of sports lack, and it’s definitely my favorite sports game of the year. I recommend this game both to hockey fans and non-fan gamers. Although I had never played an EA Sports NHL game before today, I’ll definitely be playing one tomorrow.

  • NHL 14 has once again pushed the bar once again. I appreciate how the development team really understands the particulars of the real life game as it helps to deliver another great effort. With the advancements made to many aspects of the gameplay and aesthetics this year, both big and small, virtual hockey fans should rejoice as NHL 14 is yet another winner. Given how good this current-gen game turned out I can’t wait for the next-gen versions next year!

With much better collisions and a vastly improved fighting minigame, NHL 14 is becoming more gamey and less of a simulation, but that gives it a distinct and interesting flavor compared to its predecessors. Many long-standing complaints with the series have been addressed, though AI still needs work before it’ll stop embarrassing us on the ice. Between games, the new Live the Life additions give hardcore pro hockey players something to invest in, both online and off.

  • With its leaky goaltenders, heavy hitters, and eager fighters, NHL 14 may become the most popular hockey game of the generation for casual fans. However, the hardcore contingency looking for a deeper simulation experience may hang up their skates thanks to the arcade-leaning gameplay and dull game modes in desperate need of sharpening.
