  NES Remix is a fun time waster that had me reliving the memories of my childhood once again. For $15 though it feels like a bit overpriced for what I got out of it. Still, with the Wii U library needing a bit more diversity it is a fun purchase and one that will entertain fans of NES era games enough to warrant picking it up. Just don’t expect a lot of modern design to make its way into the experience.

  Despite the glaring exclusion of other NES favorites, the no-mercy difficulty, and some bland challenges, NES Remix will resonate positively with any NES fan who welcomes a taste of the past and the feeling of satisfaction you get from the mastery retro games require to win. I can’t wait for a sequel expanding on the franchises and games included, or even better, SNES Remix.

  I can’t help feel disappointed with NES Remix. The idea is sound, and one that has been proven to work many times before, but in my opinion the choice of games really sours the experience. Off the top of my head I can think of many, far more worthy games that could have been included (Duck Hunt, anyone?), but failed to make the cut for whatever reason.

  NES Remix is an enjoyable game if you grew up in the 80s and played the games, or have experienced them before in the past. There is something very tantalising about completing challenges on your favourite NES games and repeating it to get your best score. However, if you’re new to all of these games, there is little you will get out of it.

  Not every game featured in NES Remix has aged well, and some of its challenges are brutally hard in the way that older games can be. But even with some bumps, it reinvigorated my interest in classic gaming and kept me glued to my gamepad. I felt like I was really learning mechanics the entire time I was playing — and those skills were put to the test in creative, devious ways.

  NES Remix is an example of what happens when a company gets high off its own reputation. Nintendo clearly knows how much love there is for its classics, but this is a callous and exploitative acknowledgement of that love. Serving up portion after portion of insubstantial pointlessness, Remix does nothing truly new or interesting with its ideas, and certainly nothing that amateurs haven't done far better already.

  Nintendo knows the power of its back catalog, and that power isn’t always used for good. (See: Nintendoland, a milquetoast minigame collection inspired by some of the very same games featured in Retro Remix.) So it's especially cool to see Nintendo get behind a project like NES Remix, which both honors classic games and rips them apart.
