- Narita boy has its flaws – it’s initial pacing, too much dry text exposition, perhaps too reliant on backtracking. But it shines in its presentation – both visual and audible – tied together by its fun combat and motivating you to continue to learn the creator’s backstory.
Marshall B · Dec 03, 2021 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite any perceived difficulties experienced in Narita Boy, all can be forgiven if you enjoy a world that immerses itself completely in the tech of a bygone era. There’s something to be said about racing against the digital wind on a CRT-horse in a pixelated world that looks like the SNES Star Wars game but feels like that infamous Battletoads level.
Heather Johnson Yu · Jun 26, 2021 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I had a blast with Narita Boy. It’s not perfect, but what is? Indeed, it started slowly, though, it doesn’t take long before you’re capable of exhilarating feats. And the ending is brilliant, paving the way for a sequel that will seemingly be an entirely different genre. Whatever that may be, I’ll be there, at the front of the line. It’s up to you to save the world. So get to it.
Rhett Waselenchuk · May 04, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Undoubtedly, I thoroughly enjoyed my nearly 9 hours with Narita Boy. I loved the story and lived the experience eagerly despite all its flaws. Whether it was the soundtrack, visuals, story, gameplay, or a mix of all of them, Narita Boy has a magical charm that you can only experience first-hand.
Hatem Amer · May 04, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The game is a love letter to that decade, but also feels suitably modern. It’s well crafted, even if navigating the world can be a bit vexing and the way the backstory is blasted at you is overwhelming. Don’t be deceived by the price of entry, which seems a bit steep, as Narita Boy is well worth every penny.
SebastiaanRaats · Apr 10, 2021 Reviewed on PS4, SwitchRead full review - Narita Boy is a game that takes such a strong influence from so many past works, it can often feel a bit derivative. However, that doesn’t stop the game from being enjoyable, as there’s plenty of unique challenges to overcome as well as some solid lore-building. It’s gorgeous visual design and soundtrack will be enough to entice anyone familiar with 80s pop culture, and could prove irresistible to those that have a fondness for the era.
Donovan Erskine · Apr 07, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I couldn’t help but fall in love with Narita Boy’s style once the dust settled. I love every inch of its wonderfully designed world, and the gameplay is good enough to carry the adventure. In a way, it’s like booting up an old computer. If you can put up with the cumbersome interface and some outdated design, there’s a beauty and appreciation in how it still manages to get the job done.
Marcus Stewart · Apr 06, 2021 Reviewed on PS4 - There’s no doubt the unique world the game has created is intoxicating, and although some might be put off by its retro aesthetics – the filter effect that distorts the picture edges is definitely a love it or hate it thing for example – there’s no doubt it helps elevates the experience above other Metroidvanias. Narita Boy has style and substance in equal measure, and is a massively impressive first game from Studio Koba.
Maria Alexander · Apr 05, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I don’t think I’ve ever referred to something vague as “charming,” yet that’s exactly what Narita Boy is. There’s certainly an underlying emotional narrative, but progressing through the game itself is so “out there” that I couldn’t help but want to uncover more of the Digital Kingdom and the life of The Creator.
Sam Watanuki · Apr 03, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - By no means is Narita Boy a bad game, but it’s filled with way too many incoveniences that tarnish what could have easily been one of the best indie games of the year. It’s certainly enjoyable in its current state, not only as a stylish metroidvania game, but also as one hell of a synthwave treat to your ears. But its noticeable input lag, nonsensical plot, and most importantly, its overabundance of flashing lights got on my nerves pretty quickly.
