  • In the right situation, blasting through the cluttered remains of a major city in a souped-up ATV or comically-huge monster truck is nothing short of sublime. But those moments are fleeting, and eventually, you'll find yourself snapped back into Apocalypse's tragic reality of calamitously awkward racing that's too often hamstrung by its own grand ambitions of scope and destruction. It's a cleverly ruinous game frequently ruined by its own cleverness.

  • Normally I wouldn’t spend this much time on a game that scores towards the lower end of our scale, but I really think this one could have been amazing and expect more from such a high profile exclusive. Motorstorm Apocalypse simply just doesn’t measure up to the gold standard of Sony exclusives and it comes nowhere near the potential of what was shown back in 2005.

  • However, if you want a racing experience that feels completely unique, and features some bold design choices, MotorStorm: Apocalypse is definitely a game worth checking out. With a robust single-player experience, fun online component, and plenty of vehicles and tracks to blast through, this is one end-of the-world party that you certainly won't want to miss!

  • Every track, every crumbling building, every explosive high-speed crash is perfect for 3D. It not only adds a layer of depth to help judge turns and avoid road hazards, but it really cranks up the excitement and on-screen chaos. It’s so good that anyone who does have the luxury of playing Motorstorm: Apocalypse on a 3DTV should consider adding a full point to our final score.

  • MotorStorm Apocalypse really nails the whole apocalypse thing, no question. It's the actual racing that's taken the back seat. There are moments when the planets align and the experience becomes pure arcade racing magic -- but they're only moments. The rest of the time you're just an angsty, glorified crash test dummy.

  • Apocalypse has high expectations of the player, but the reward for hard work, diligence and patience is one of the most exciting racing games available. Even with the lingering issues, this is Motorstorm at its most extravagant, at its most intense, and at its absolute best.

MotorStorm Apocalypse’s shift to the end of the world helps distil the very essence of what this series is about. Racing through the rubble is unpredictable and thrilling, but some of the rougher edges have also been amplified. Its ambition can push the game beyond the limits of frustration, though it also gives rise to some spectacular moments that help make this an experience that, while flawed, is brilliantly unique.

  • MotorStorm: Apocalypse is so intense at times, and utterly frustrating when you happen to lightly clip a car or piece of scenery and spin-out only to be placed at the back of the pack. But, its pick-up-and-play appeal is undeniable and hypnotic gameplay absolutely addictive.

  • This is a loud, often spectacular dash through countless set-pieces and ragdoll pedestrians. However, 'trying not to crash' isn't as fun as racing or combat, but that's what you'll be doing for 95% of the time. It's just not as fun as it should be.

  • Regardless of whether you experience the game in 3D or not, MotorStorm: Apocalypse is a fantastic-looking game that's tonnes of fun to play. But it's the jaw-dropping track design that will keep you coming back for more, creating some of the most sensational racing you can experience on the PlayStation 3.

    About the game

Set over a three day period, MotorStorm Apocalypse's backdrop is rapidly disintegrating -- You are there when it happens, and this is survival racing! Throughout the game the city will be ripped to pieces, in real-time, as you race. Routes will be affected, as will our emergent gameplay. Buggies using collapsing walls as half-pipes. Big Rigs on the rooftops of skyscrapers as they collapse. Superbikes gunning into the basements of enormous rifts. Supercars flicking on their headlights to barrel through the subways and sewers. You've never raced on the edge of insanity like this before.
