  • Moonscars is an entertaining and accessible Metroidvania that won’t rock anybody’s world, but it offers a fair amount of content. Containing about 8 to 10 hours of gameplay, Moonscars can be beaten in a few sessions and is a good starting point for those looking to get into “Soulsy” Metroidvanias, as the game is easier than Blasphemous or Hollow Knight.

  • Moonscars is a dark and punchy 2D action adventure that tweaks the Soulslike formula just enough to make it worth jumping into yet another entry in this most overstuffed of genres. The combat here is super slick stuff that's meticulously animated through the game's exquisite pixel art style, there are a ton of cool skills and weapons to get your hands on, and the world and its enemies are thoroughly well-designed.

  • Moonscars has an enormous skill tree, but the cost to learn new attacks, or upgraded versions of learned attacks, increases exponentially so you won’t be learning new magic attacks at a steady pace.

  • The gameplay isn’t the only area of the game with an unforced error either – as gorgeous as the game looks, the music is completely forgettable. I will say that to its credit it’s not bad, and at the very least it does contribute to the mood and tone the game is going for, but it just could have been so much better.

  • Moonscars’ fluid combat mechanics, fun boss battles, and lovely art stylings kept me engaged and made me a believer that there is a lot more enjoyment still to be milled from the souls-like subgenre. Black Mermaid has molded themselves a familiar work of video game art that is also unique in enough ways to stand out as its own thing.

  • Its atmosphere is thick thanks to its moody visuals and soundtrack, while its moment-to-moment gameplay is utterly engrossing once it has its hooks in you.

  • To sum it up, the developers of Moonscars have taken the old hackneyed Metroidvania techniques and Souls-like game mechanics and managed to mix them in a unique way, creating a wild fusion of visual style, emotions and gameplay.

  • All in all, Moonscars came in hot with all the tools that could’ve made for an engrossing Souls-like Metroidvania. Sadly, it fell flat with its attempt at the former. As for the latter, it had too many ideas that didn’t necessarily mesh well with others.

  • Despite minor bugs and a save system that could cause frustration, the core of Moonscars is a pleasurable journey through a crushingly dark world. Black Mermaid’s first title is filled with love for the platforming genre, and it shows in every aspect of the game.

  • Moonscars is a collection of good ideas executed poorly and held back by a baffling story. In the heat of battle with one of the game’s well-designed and memorable boss fights, it shines almost as brightly as those it's inspired by.
