- I said it before, and I meant it: Moonlighter is a great game. It feels good to play, the soundtrack is great, and all my complaints are really quite minor. It is an interesting blend of dungeon crawler and shopkeep simulator, something not really delivered by other games that I have found. As a mobile port, it is excellent. Recommending it is easy, however with a twelve dollar price tag, it isn’t something everyone can or should pick up without second thought. Nevertheless, if you’re on the fence and have previously enjoyed games from both of the genres it pulls from, it’s definitely worth a shot.
James Wyndcliffe · Dec 01, 2020 Reviewed on iOSRead full review - Who would have thought that the classic action-RPG would be revitalized by the typically boring prospect of running a small business? Diving into procedurally generated dungeons and slaying beasts with every manner of weapon answers the question, “What would a 2D version of Breath of the Wild look and play like?” Well, sort of like Moonlighter.
Jaime Carrillo · Nov 15, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The graphics possess a cute cartoonish refinement with more than a touch of anime influences, paired with excellent animations and spellbinding music which together creates a truly exceptional and wonderful atmosphere. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your Nintendo Switch, turn on Moonlighter and turn all your dreams into reality. You owe it to yourself.
Brandon Rhuhm Wolfe · Nov 12, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I’m not completely calling these issues dealbreakers, particularly since the good stuff carries much more worth than the bad. Moonlighter is one of those titles that just sort of ended up making me okay with its contrivances and keep playing for a pretty long while. In fact, just thinking about it as I write this is making me want to fire it up again, so it absolutely is under my skin.
Wolfy · Nov 02, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The beauty of Moonlighter is how seamlessly it bends dungeon-crawling with a store simulator. Every action you take, whether it be in the dungeons collecting materials or in your shop earning gold to spend on upgrades, helps to move you further along towards your end goal. There were a few technical hiccups that cropped up from time to time and the last few upgrades needed a bit of grinding to unlock.
Casey Gibson · Nov 02, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - If you want to play a top-down Legend of Zelda game as a rogue-lite while also taking shifts as a shopkeeper then, hey, Moonlighter is about to scratch a distinctive itch for you. It hits a sweet spot somewhere between satisfying swordplay and nitty-gritty economic sim, although some players may feel it gets ‘grindy’ after a while in its mechanics. Nonetheless, Digital Sun Games has produced a lush work it can be proud of; one that even touches on our humanity in an optimistic way.
Eric Bailey · Nov 01, 2018 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Moonlighter is a great experience that evokes the spirit of SNES-era ARPGs. Every colorful detail is filled with references and nods to its inspirational predecessors. With clever inventory management, a very intriguing system of maintaining and managing a store front, as well as its intuitive economic composition, I found myself playing this for hours unintentionally neglecting sleep, work, and adult responsibilities. Although it’s mandatory that I factor in the unfortunate amount of easily patchable bugs and glitches into my final score, I really did enjoy this game and would’ve unquestionably given it a shining appraisal with the right amount of polish. Despite what a score of 6.5 might sound like in the minds of many gamers, I STILL STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS GAME!
Stephen Johnson · Jun 19, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It's a shame, then that Moonlighter's also a bit on the short end, as some of these ideas would do well with simply more--but then the combat would like thin out even more. Still, what's here is refreshing, and the balance struck between crawling through dungeons and working with the economics of the town are a good combo while it lasts.
Daniel Starkey · Jun 11, 2018 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - Regardless of the faults that game may have, Moonlighter is a fantastic game, both in mechanics and in execution. The carrot-on-a-stick nature of the progression is superb, and the dungeon parts are both challenging and rewarding. That, along with the wonderful soundtrack and nice pixel art, make for a beautiful aesthetic that is both fun and nice to see in action.
Drew Leachman · Jun 08, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall the two halves of the game fit together very well and combine to make an interesting game. Clearing out the dungeons can occasionally feel a bit grindy because I often had to do part of it over and over before I was able to get all the way through it. There’s even a bit of a town management aspect as well.
