  • Each soldier type can be played in a number of ways, and discovering new strategies and maximizing your battlefield effectiveness is an engrossing challenge. The clever combat design and well-tuned class complexity make this a great online multiplayer class-and-team-based, third-person tower defense shooter. And if that's a bit wordy for you, then just call Monday Night Combat a very addictive and very entertaining game.

  • With five mostly-similar maps, it may not stand in with the longevity of your primary FPS, but at $15, it's the best-available diversion to the 300-plus hours you've put into the shooter you're growing tired of. MNC also has the distinction of being a game where you can fire a grenade that coats an enemy's screen with ads for genetic enhancements. Go buy it.

  • The gameplay is a lot less realistic than most shooters, with exaggerated (albeit T-rated) kill animations and fantasy weapon design, but MNC’s shooting mechanics are still as solid as most triple-A third-person shooters on the market. The ability to create custom classes and choose your own endorsements (MNC’s equivalent of perks) is an appreciated bonus that will help keep players engaged as the novelty of the two modes begins to wear off.

  • Monday Night Combat has its flaws, but ultimately it's a game that looks great, has a lot of heart, and provides a fun, unique, and undeniably addictive multiplayer experience that's well worth the fifteen bucks. With more balancing and a great variety of things to do, this could be an absolutely stellar title. As it exists, however, Monday Night Combat is most definitely the start of something very, very good.

  • As enjoyable as Monday Night Combat was, if I was to remove the factor that I was often playing with friends and/or colleagues, I'm sure that enjoyment would’ve plummeted. The single-player is, as expected, a throwaway and easy for achievements. Without the announcer in my ear telling me how awful I was performing in comparison to the last match, Monday Night Combat would’ve turned into a rather lonely title.

  • That's also Monday Night Combat's strength, though; it's lean, cheap, and focused, but it still offers a great multiplayer formula that feels like more than its component parts. Get a few friends together who are ready to learn the ins and outs of the available classes and tactics, and there's enough depth here to keep you playing for a good long while after you've gotten your $15 worth.

  • Monday Night Combat is an adeptly handled game. It's an exciting, occasionally thrilling online shooter with a genuinely engaging hook, and a clever hodgepodge of many pre-existing trends to boot. What's most exciting, though, is how the game (and the franchise) could develop in the months and years to come. Tower Defence is no longer the staple diet of iPhone and Flash developers.

  • When your main complaint about a game is that there simply isn’t enough of it, that’s a good sign. The well-balanced classes, interesting Crossfire mode, and ability to make use of turrets make MNC an entertaining experience. While it would have been nice if there were a few more modes to choose from, what’s there is fun and worth playing.

  • Overall the frustration factor feels very low for a competitive shooter, yet at the same time it’s very hardcore skill-based, so it can appeal to all skill levels. Even when we lost matches or got crappy kill/death ratios, we were still having fun, which can’t be said for a lot of shooters out there.

  • As I said, it can be too easy to write something off merely as a combination of popular ideas, but Monday Night Combat handily outstrips the sum of its parts, presenting a fresh, fun take on class-based shooters. There are so many variables -- twelve players, numerous bots, turrets, unique map features -- that it's hard to imagine a match playing out the same way twice. For anyone with a stable crew of online friends, Monday Night Combat deserves a spot in the usual rotation.
