  • If MLB The Show's new MO is just coasting on the good gameplay and providing minor tweaks to disparate modes, each with their own appeal (or lack thereof, depending), then there's no greater candidate for games-as-service that I can see. Because there's good money in it, however, I doubt we'll drop the yearly release format.

  • New features like ShowTime and Conquest, along with steady-if-unspectacular improvements to on-field action, animations, and visuals, make for subtly better game that fans of the franchise will appreciate. Once again, Sony makes it look easy by giving us yet another baseball simulation that not only hits ’em where they ain’t, it clears the fences completely on a regular basis.

  • Subtle pacing changes make its predecessors seem laborious, and despite ShowTime's inconsistent debut, this version of Road to the Show is still more intriguing and playable than last year's. MLB 16 has the luxury of taking a few risks in the parts of its game that already are strong. The result may not be the equivalent of a dramatic home run, but it's still a solid hit.

MLB: The Show 16 is one of the best baseball games I have ever played. Granted, I haven’t played many in my life, but this one really does have some great things going for it. If you’re looking for a more personal approach, the Road to the Show is a fun place to start. If you’re looking for an in-depth look at the world of baseball as a whole, Franchise Mode has you covered.

  • Yes, MLB: The Show 16 is more of the same in a lot of ways. However, new features like ShowTime and modes like Conquest give this entry enough new toys to feel like a meaningful improvement over last year’s entry. If you’re a fan of the series, this year’s version is worth checking out unless you’re suffering from the most severe of digital baseball boredom.

  • Sony’s undisputed king of virtual baseball games suffered a slight set-back last year but the franchise is back in fine form in 2016. MLB The Show 16 pushes the franchise forward creating its most authentic true to life Major League Baseball experience yet. The enhancements and upgrades are significant making this one of the deepest baseball games I have ever played.

  • MLB The Show brings meaningful additions to all of its major modes, with Battle Royale and the quality of life improvements in the addictive Road to the Show being the clear standouts here. A combination of depth and accessibility in all of its modes, with the exceptions of Franchise and Conquest, allows for even the most jaded former baseball fans to enjoy a trip to the virtual diamond, and this is no small feat.

  • A series built on the fundamentals of the sport ventures into fantastical waters with new modes and abilities that have little to do with baseball. The long-running series needed new experiences, and Sony delivered two that will make you spend more time in Diamond Dynasty.

Simply put, MLB The Show 16 is the best baseball game available on any current-gen console. It looks, plays, and feels amazing, offering many ways to play the great American pastime. Franchise and Road to the Show modes have made incremental but impressive improvements, while Diamond Dynasty offers entirely new ways to play. Not every mode works, but it’s encouraging to see such a radical new mix of gameplay.

  • MLB The Show 16 continues to find innovative ways to push the series forward by adding new features and improving on old ones. Some new problems have arisen, however, and old ones—most notably the horrendous stability of online play—continue to persist and hold the series back.
