  • There's no shortage of ways to stay busy, whether you want to run a whole team, follow the career of a single player, or manage a game from the dugout. It's a shame that, even after another year in development, Road to the Show isn't quite as refined as the game's other aspects, but it's still an interesting mode that generally manages to be enjoyable in spite of its flaws. If you're looking for a great baseball game that covers all the bases, look no further than MLB 08: The Show.

  • While MLB 08 falls a few feet short of a grand slam, it feels like baseball, which will make you live with its relatively minor miscues. The developers are obviously big fans, something that comes across in so many of the details you'll witness from game to game. Some days you'll blow the computer out, while other days you'll be battling to the last pitch. Each game offers something new, something that will surprise you, making MLB 08 one of the most enjoyable sports games you'll play this year.

  • The deliciously intense competition to claw your way to the big leagues is unparalleled, and agonizing over which player attributes to improve during your career is wonderfully stressful. While we do still find some aspects of Road slightly annoying (especially the virtually inhuman spring training you’ll need to catch on with a major league club), it’s an all-consuming addiction that can quickly take over your life. And we mean that in the best way possible.

  • If you're looking for an authentic simulation of the national pastime, then look no further. No other franchise can match MLB 08: The Show. It's too bad it's only made for Sony products because the attention to detail and incredibly realistic gameplay to be found in the title, combined with some great new features make this the baseball game of the year.

Last year, PS3 owners were let down by strange AI problems, weak visuals and game features that just didn't deliver what they promised. That's not the case this time, MLB '08 delivers on every gameplay front. The on-field play is excellently done, the stat tracking is immense, and Road to the Show is one of the best career modes around. Visually striking, this is the baseball game that baseball fans have been waiting for on the PS3.

About the game

To deliver the closest experience possible, next to actually trying to make it in the Majors, MLB 08: The Show introduces a more immersive gameplay experience. In Road to The Show mode, as gamers attempt to make a starting line-up in the Big Leagues, playing on both offense and defense from a custom-created player's perspective, a more robust dynamic goal system and a new career advancement system determines when a player is eligible for a promotion.
