- Minds Beneath Us es, sin duda, una de las mejores historias de lo que va de año y también de las mejores que puedes disfrutar en el terreno de la ciencia-ficción cyberpunk. Nuestro protagonista no solo esconde muchos secretos, sino que su nuevo trabajo en la granja de flops de la corporación Vision retrata un viaje para entender hasta qué punto puede caer el valor de la vida humana en una sociedad superpoblada y decadente. Se trata de una novela visual muy atípica, porque su estructura nos permite ver a nuestro personaje y movernos en un entorno tridimensional con perspectiva horizontal. Su mecánica principal es la toma de decisiones, muy bien planteadas para hacer realmente partícipe al jugador de la historia.

In around twelve hours, you may complete the game—or longer if you are as picky as I am and prefer to explore every inch. I am definitely putting this as one of my favourite indie games of all time, and I will keep an open mind for other projects that are of genres I usually do not invest in.

Un thriller distopico coinvolgente, scritto benissimo e dal ritmo sempre incalzante; non mancano tempi un po' più morti ma persino questi sanno regalare approfondimenti del mondo che ci circonda o dei personaggi che lo abitano, assieme alla loro visione della società e una generale comprensione del contesto in cui ci troviamo. La costante presenza di scelte multiple, alcune a tempo e altre no, concorre a rendere l'esperienza fortemente intima, plasmata dalle nostre decisioni che poi verranno riflesse da uno dei finali a cui arriveremo. Introdurre dei momenti QTE sotto forma di combattimento è un'altra scelta apprezzabile, che dà varietà al gioco senza per questo spostarne il focus prevalentemente narrativo.

Il suo punto forza è il legame che riesce a creare tra lo spunto narrativo e ciò che richiede al giocatore. La ricompensa per la pazienza necessaria è un gioco con un’atmosfera inquietante, difficile da trovare altrove.

It’s also good at creating an interesting vision of the future while offering a core narrative that tackles modern themes in engaging ways. Its presentation adds to the immersion level, although the lack of faces will be a little disturbing. Its mechanics do not stray from the adventure game standard and when they do QTEs make an unwelcome appearance. A few conversations are over-written, especially when the game tries to focus on emotions. But Minds Beneath Us offers a good enough story that these are small problems. Play around a full day at a time and savor every interaction.

Illusion of meaningful choices aside, it tells a compelling sci-fi tale of corporations gone awry and hits the sweet spot of good sci-fi philosophy that fans may be wanting in 2024. It’s gorgeous, too.

However, it also shows us the importance of humans. Why we are here, why we form connections, why we fight for eachother. The game also makes us question our morals and beliefs and asks us how far we are willing to go in order to make the world a better place. It keeps you on your toes and creeps under your skin and reminds us that although the future may look bright, corruption will always lurk below.
