- Its inclusion of the rhythm mechanics and even the ‘bullet hell’ aspects of some fights that have players dodging bullets and enemies around an arena is one of those things. This might not be the best example of a demon slaying game done right, but this is a fantastic tribute to those that have come before and a great example of thinking outside the box and taking a change on something different in a sea of sameness.
Terrence Johnson · Nov 09, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Metal: Hellsinger is an extremely addictive game, and its easy to complete it in one or a few gaming sessions. However, it’s also addicting enough that once you complete it you are happy to jump right back into the mix. The music and art style ensures that this game will have a long life, well past its release dates and with the promise of the ability to add your own music tracks coming down the pipe means you’ll be rocking out and killing demons to some of your favorite Ozzy tunes in no time!
Michael Newman · Oct 03, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Metal: Hellsinger is relatively short, and while there are additional challenges you can complete if you fell in love with it, that’s mostly a good thing. While its core mechanics are strong, and I love its soundtrack, it’s a one-dimensional game where you’ll have seen most everything it has to offer quickly.
Andrew Thornton · Sep 29, 2022 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Metal: Hellsinger is a pleasant blend of action and rhythm, allowing players to get lost in the mayhem of Hell. While a relatively short campaign might leave players wanting more, what’s already there is an excellent package that fans of rhythm and action will immediately agree is a classic.
Nathan Mejia · Sep 27, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The bosses are all different takes on a similar idea: bullet-hell FPS. Their visual designs are nearly identical, narratively explained by each being an aspect of the Red Judge. They all function and move very similarly, albeit with different arenas and some varying abilities. The bosses were by no means dull; in fact, they were often the most challenging, fun, and satisfying part of a level. But when a player faces another carbon cut-out of every previous boss that disappears, flies around, and shoots fireballs like all the others, the encounters become somewhat anticlimactic.
Sam Stewart · Sep 23, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It’s a perfectly fine game with lots of replay value, some neat ideas, a good soundtrack and a goofy story. The game aspires to greatness, and even if it doesn’t get there, I’d play its sequel if The Outsiders ever made one.
Kaile Hultner · Sep 22, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Metal: Hellsinger is nonetheless an ambitious and unusual game, which feels like a bit of a one-off. Even if it does share quite a lot of DNA with some of id Software's finest moments, Metal: Hellsinger’s 'DOOM-with-rhythm' is a killer premise, and if it sounds like your sort of thing, then you'll probably want to get on it pretty sharpish.
Richard Walker · Sep 22, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - It's easy to say this game should inspire others to pursue this genre mashup, too, to create similar experiences, but The Outsiders got it so very right with Metal: Hellsinger that perhaps it's better to let this one marinate for a while before a truly creative iteration of this comes along.
Tanner Dedmon · Sep 21, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Metal: Hellsinger is one of the most unique, refreshing video game offerings I’ve seen in a while thanks to how it caters to fans of metal music, and its approach to rhythm mechanics.
Morgan Shaver · Sep 19, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Ultimately, you have a game with one masterfully designed core element — the rhythm gunplay — surrounded by a number of elements that, while not terrible, are mediocre at best.
