  • Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D emulates one of the best games ever adeptly, and if you’re a Nintendo fan that never owned any of the previous systems it appeared on, it’s worth exploring. However, if you have the Subsistence version for PS2 or last November’s MGS HD Collection (which costs the same as this 3DS remake), MGS3D isn’t a superior replacement.

  • At its core, though this Metal Gear title for the 3DS is still a very good game if you’re up for some espionage action and a dramatic plot. Fans of the series looking for an excuse to play some Metal Gear Solid again will be satisfied here, and newbie’s should also love it. If you can get past some of the games quirks, there is a ton of content to enjoy here.

  • Your interest in this game will be entirely dependent on whether you already played the original, or if you’re rearin’ to play it again. Metal Gear Solid 3D is a great showcase of what the 3DS can do and what kind of experience it can offer, I just wish that showcase didn’t retread old ground.

  • It all results in a game with 9.5/10 ideas delivered in a 6/10 package. If you already own the original, or if you aren't keen on playing Snake Eater on a portable, then there is no reason to pick it up again. If you do want the game on the go, you may be better off waiting for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on the PS Vita.

...the tightest, smartest and most emotional journey in the series – and even its HD update doesn’t look as good as this portable treatment.

  • And that really sums it up. Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D is a middling port of an exceptional game: a prime steak served with a side of tree frogs and twigs. Like the creatures Snake feasts on during his virtuous mission, Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D is a delicacy that few will sample. Those with limited options, however, should take the plunge and tuck in.

  • But that’s it. While the core game is still a classic and perfectly serviceable on the 3DS, the HD Collection just blows this out of the water. With the HD port being of the superior Subsistence version, on top of getting MGS2 and Peace Walker bundled in for the same price as this offering, it has infinitely superior value.

This is a game that anyone who's serious about games should play. A mammoth adventure crafted with unparalleled attention to detail. A fantastic experience.

  • Don’t be hypnotized by this snake’s gaze--this is far from the optimal way to experience this classic.

  • If you've never fought with The End, eaten a rotting crab or climbed the tallest ladder in gaming, and if the 3DS is the only console you own, you really should acquire this game as soon as you can. When everyone said that you'd love it, they really weren't lying.
