- The greatest strength of this game is the storytelling and how consistent it is with the rest of the series. Though ME2 included that brief comic-book introduction, there is absolutely no way to compare it to the actual experience of playing through all of the major and minor situations that take place in Mass Effect. Even though Mass Effect is rooted in the old style of explorative gameplay, the overall experience of playing this game entirely through is a blessing for anyone who’s been limited by Mass Effect only being on the Xbox 360.
Timothy Nunes · Dec 20, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - The story is fantastic as well. I mean, this is BioWare, and we know that they can put together a fantastic tale when they really put their all into it. Mass Effect is quality. The story is very well done. The characters are well written, and it’s amazing to see how they were at the beginning. It's like I got to see them as they were, and can now appreciate how they've grown from Mass Effect to Mass Effect 2 and 3. I have to admit that I'm also gaining a new appreciation for Ashley Williams, who I’d never met before.
Jenni Lada · Dec 11, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - I love the original Mass Effect, and I’m pleased that PlayStation 3 gamers who may never have experienced it elsewhere finally have a chance to do so. I’m in the camp that believes the games simply get better the further you get into the series, meaning that for as amazing as Mass Effect is, its sequels are more amazing yet. So if you like this game, just imagine how much you’ll like what follows it.
Colin Moriarty · Dec 10, 2012 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Too vague for you? Sorry. To say more would give too much away. Just trust that it's all great: plot, characters, voice acting, the sheer sense of scale - everything. Add in fantastic graphics and a cinematic flair, and the end result is a truly memorable story. Our only complaint was that it ended too soon - we wanted more.
Eric Bratcher · Jun 24, 2012 Reviewed on PC, X360Read full review - All the things that made Mass Effect great on the 360--the story, the conversations, the galaxy, the combat, the soundtrack, and the characters--are still great on the PC. The changes that have been implemented don't radically alter the game in any way, but they have enough of a positive impact to make it easy to recommend the PC version over the 360 version.
Chris Watters · May 30, 2008 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Despite some of the minor problems, the free downloadable content provided directly by BioWare, the free patches to enhance gameplay, and the new tweaks for the PC platform make Mass Effect a must-buy for those who just couldn't pony-up the dough for an Xbox 360 when it was first released.
Derek Hidey · May 28, 2008 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It almost goes without saying that BioWare remains one of the very top single-player RPG makers on the planet, and Mass Effect only reinforces their position. This is easily one of the best RPGs on the platform in recent years, delivering a terrific new universe, a fun blend of action and role-playing, and a deeply satisfying story. If you have any love of science fiction or space opera, then you owe it to yourself to check it out. There are hours upon hours of joyful discovery here, and an undeniable love for science fiction, as well.
Jason Ocampo · May 27, 2008 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There are some who would say that Mass Effect feels more at home on the PC, that when you take into account the higher resolution, the performance improvements and the interface tweaks it's somewhat of a director's cut. This would be an understandable assessment. But I happen to think that both games have different strengths and weaknesses. Mass Effect PC is unashamedly hardcore.
Wesley Yin-Poole · May 27, 2008 Reviewed on PCRead full review - All in all, Mass Effect is a good game which will disappoint nearly everyone who plays it. Immensely flawed in its design choices, but absolutely fantastic in its attention to character and atmosphere, Mass Effect is enjoyable, but not a masterpiece; entertaining, but not revolutionary; epic and emotionally involving, but disappointing. It is not a great game -- but it is, generally, a good one.
Anthony Burch · Dec 01, 2007 Reviewed on X360Read full review - If you're looking for a title that tells a great story, is loaded with content, has a surprising amount of re-playability due to customization, and will keep you glued to your couch, Mass Effect is a great choice. It's unfortunate that the game has a mature rating and only comes out for the Xbox 360. If you're under 17 or are a Sony snob, you are going to miss out big time. For the rest of us it's smooth sailing across a galaxy full of adventure!
