- It's missing the imagination of SEGA's Virtua Tennis series, it doesn't have the gameplay depth of PAM's Top Spin franchise, it's not moddable like Mana Games' downloadable Tennis Elbow, and it doesn't offer a compelling single-player mode, like Camelot's handheld Mario Tennis titles did a decade ago. Ultra Smash is Mario Tennis' first career service fault.
Jayson Young · Nov 30, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is one of the most disappointing games I’ve played this year. The tennis part is pretty fun, but the rest of the game is so light on content it’s hard to recommend this to anyone outside of children or tennis fans.
Jason Fanelli · Nov 30, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - I had a lot of fun playing Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, but it fizzled out way too soon. The game play is excellent, but the lack of modes and diversity really suck the fun out of it after a couple hours. Not being able to play with friends online is a drag, and the AI is simply not enough to keep me coming back. I wanted to love Ultra Smash, but it fought me at every turn to keep me from wanting to play more of it.
Ken McKown · Nov 25, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Those who can find pleasure simply in playing a basic game of tennis with no frills or changes of pace will do fine with Ultra Smash, but anybody looking for substance won’t find it in this barebones package. Camelot needs to revisit their outstanding Game Boy Color entry to remember how incredible a Mario Tennis can be before heading back out to the court.
Steve Hannley · Nov 19, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash can still deliver on the thrills that you have always had, but lacks enough content to provide a comprehensive experience.
Alex Seedhouse · Nov 18, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - At the end of the day, folks looking for something more to do with their collection of amiibos, or who want a new multiplayer game to sit down with their friends, should definitely consider this one. What I can’t recommend though is expecting too much out of it from a single player standpoint. The fun is there, but only surface deep and is much better experienced with others in the room with you.
Royce Dean · Nov 18, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is as stripped-down a Nintendo sports game as I’ve ever played. The absence of modes, unimpressive unlockables, and tiring hook offer very little reason to keep playing. Sure, it’s pretty, but that’s about all it has going for it.
Marty Sliva · Nov 18, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Considered as a whole, Ultra Smash does just enough to get by. At moments it shines and at others it frustrates, but mostly it just coasts. Without substantial content to drive longevity, you may end up switching back to Mario Kart sooner than later, but if you're playing online--or better yet, with your friends at home--you'll likely overcome the game's frustrations and squeeze a solid few hours of fun out of its fast-paced, power-up-driven action.
Scott Butterworth · Nov 18, 2015 Reviewed on Wii URead full review - Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash feels like an unfinished game. The shallow mechanics quickly grow tiresome, and this is further emphasized by the lack of game modes and creativity that we’d expect from a Mario sports game. It can be a fun diversion with a group of friends, but it loses its appeal within a day.
Michael Huber · Nov 18, 2015 Reviewed on Wii U - The extracurricular activities are severely lacking, but the core tennis is good. Hitting a ball back and forth has been a fun video game pastime time since the medium’s inception, and responding to your opponent’s volley with the appropriate attack and pulling off powerful Ultra Smashes and jumpshots is fun. I just wanted more reasons to keep playing.

About the game
Trailers & Screenshots:
Along with the fun and dynamic gameplay known to the franchise, surprise your opponents with a new move to the series, the Jumpshot, which sends the ball flying down the court. Change the sport up with new Mega Battles, using the Mega Mushroom to gain an advantage over the competition. Claim your spot in Mario Tennis lore in singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2) as you play with and against family, friends or the CPU using returning and new characters to the series.
